Rabjr created the topic: Ick!

I'm curious how would you treat Ick to an Oscar and a Pleco and Pictus Catfish that are in the same tank?

Wanting to prepare myself for everything I asked about meds at the shop where I got my fish. I was told by them that liquid garlic was probably my best bet for if and when this happens. They told me to soak the food in the garlic before feeding. This causes the parasite to detach from the fish.

I can understand where you're coming from but to be perfectly honest with you, I really don't think there is any need to start giving them treatment for a condition that they haven't got. Prevention is better than cure. If you want to try and do your best to avoid all the diseases that fish can pick up then carrying out proper tank maintenance and following a few simple rules. This way, you can help prevent various illnesses such as ick. Don't fluctuate water temperature too much. Try not to stress fish out, feed them on a varied and healthy diet and always be careful what other fish you put some of them, make sure they haven't got any diseases that could be passed on.

I'm sorry you misunderstood. I guess I was asking if you had heard of this "cure" and what people here would use for Ick. I 'm not doing this treatment as a preventive.

Sorry about that. I haven't actually ever had a case of ick any of my fish over the years. There is a section on this website which lists various products that can help. What you have to remember is that when you see the white cysts, a lot of these medications won't work because the parasite's will be immune to them. You have to start treating when you see the fish showing signs of ick. This is normally when they scrap themselves up against the substrate and rocks. However, fish do this occasionally which is why people do panic and think their fish have this disease. By fish so complicated?
