im not sure about ur oscar's tolerance level. but i always use 1 teaspoon(5ml) in every 5 gal of water instead of 1 tablespoon(15ml). im a betta breeder, but then again, bettas hav a very high salinity tolerance. ive used 1 teaspoon for every gal with no problems except for some slime excess. but if u hav some pangas or catfish in ur tank, u should consider reducing the salt to half(a teaspoon for every 10 gal).. same goes for copper, formalin or methylene blue based meds if ure using them instead of salt.

use the salt sparingly.. it doesnt take much to get rid of ich(its the easiest disease to rid).. its better than stressing ur fish, stress is a bigger killer. most probably its the stress from the swollen gills that is causing the ich.
swollen gills can mean several things. gill flukes, ammonia burn, ich and velvet could be the cause. either its ich causing the swell or the other way around, the treatment is the same. u should get some anti bacterial to prevent secondary infection.

i wouldnt recommend med/salt baths bcos ich couldnt be affected when it is in cyst mode(when its still on ur fish). u only can kill them when theyre in free-swimming stage(after 2-5 days they will fall off ur fish to reproduce 100 fold). u HAVE to treat ur whole tank.

thank you sooo much. so then, what i am understanding is that salt is sufficient? since my temp went up to 84 from 78, my O is acting almost back to normal. still not eating but i understand that could have been from the meds and ich is also the cause as per the article in this website. please let me know if i understood. i put 1 tablespoon for each 10 gallons. thanks.

this was posted in the other thread by decided to use it here for continuity:

after so many differnt treatments for my O for multiple unusual behaviors (no appetite, jerking, laying in bottom, gasping for oxygen, swollen gills, lethargic, loss of vision), and after reading so many articles trying to figure out what was wrong with my Nemo, the final conclusion is that he has ich. i tried treatments for it like melafix, pimafix, ich tablets, etc. i finally decided to do the 1 tablespoon of aquarium salt per each 10 gallons and get 2 heaters and for the FIRST time, my Nemo is acting normal. still not eating as before and vision still not what it used to be but everthing else has stopped.

my question is how long before i have to do a water change to remove the salt and what part of the filter do i need to wash/clean after the water change? thanks!

same procedure of normal tank...you should do water change when your water
parameter becomes bad: say increase in ammonia; increase in nitrite; or
increase in nitrate....or erratic pH. if it is after medication, some
people uses carbon to effectively remove medicine...and then remove
the carbon after wards.
