Joliet Jake created the topic: I've got a Pair!

I think I purchased a Mating Pair! :)

I picked up two Tiger Oscars about a week (maybe two) ago and these two were alone in a tank at the pet store except for a Jack Dempsey of similar size (3-1/2" to 4") they were housed with. One Oscar was just slightly smaller then the other, but I had a feeling this might be male and female.

Tonight I set up a new Tank which will be theirs after it cycles and I took about half of the gravel from their existing tank to add to the new tank to help it cycle. Needless to say, I also did about a 35% water change. Soon thereafter, the two Oscars came out of hiding and began to explore the now bare spot on the aquarium bed. They both were quite interested in the flat bare aquarium bottom and both seemed to lay against it, inspect it closely and even rub it a bit. Then things got better. These two fish had always been good friend and often side by side throughout the tank with the exception of some mild games with each other. But what happened next was amost obscene in the fish world as these two began to curl and wrap around each other which reinforces my thought that I may in fact have a Male and Female mating capable pair here.

Maybe it was the sexy bare bottom of the tank. ;) Maybe it was the fresh oxygenated water that I just added back in. Maybe it was the mood music playing softly in the background/ :woohoo: Well all I know for sure is that these two babies are already thinking about making babies!

If Babies do come down the road, I will set up another aquarium to raise them until I can give them away or sell them.

When I first got my two Oscars I hadn't got a clue what sex they were.. Anyway, it just so happened that they turned out to be male and female. I only knew this when they laid eggs. When this happened, I could see both the female sexual organs and the males as well. This is really the only conclusive way people know what sex they are Oscars. Even two Oscars of the same sex will hang around with each other and maybe even perform such tasks as jaw locking and cleaning rocks. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. Regarding breeding, I have seen loads of posts where peoples Oscars have laid eggs and they have hatched. Two days later they are posting messages saying all the fry are dead. This isn't surprising, fry need to be fed on baby brine shrimp, not normal fish food like most people think and try. To be really successful, you should remove the fry from the main tank, or preferably take the egg out of the tank before they hatch.

My goal was not to buy a mating pair specifically, nor will it be to have and raise babies if they are a mating pair.

However if that does happen, I will do my best to care for and raise the babies until I can sell of give them away to those who can and will care for them.
They will go to a seperate tank of their own if they hatch. Thats a long way off as these two are too young for that right now but it seems these may be M&F.

It is nice to have a male and female, even if you don't intend on breeding. They will lay eggs, you won't stop them doing that.. I just like letting them get on with it. I have got seven babies at the moment, all around three, to 3 1/2 inches. I am starting to notice them spitting of from the group and at least two of them seem to be pairing up. I'm hoping to get at least two pairs. I can't make my mind up whether to keep my six-foot tank when I get my eight-foot tank.

Iknow its a hard decision to part with any of them. I myelf will be moving in another year or two and at that time I will plan for a bigger aquarium of at least 6' in length.

I have got these seven Oscars and it is going to be really hard getting rid of some. However, I haven't got room for all of them, just four if I split them between the two tanks. Mind you, I am sure that a breeding pair of Oscars is worth quite a bit of money so I might wait until I am absolutely sure and then see if somebody who wants to breed Oscars will buy them off me. I was going to make the 8 foot tank into an Amazon tank but I can't bear to part with my two massive clown loach so I'm afraid it's going to have to be a bit of a mishmash

Well, I am convinced more then ever this morning that I have a mating pair. These two Oscars are like love birds in a cage it seems and it is evident they will mate when old enough to do so. I am also amazed amost daily how fast their coloring seems to be changing. They went from black to dark green yesterday (and for the past few days) to a definite medium green today with bronze and copper tiger markings throughout. I'll try to get some photos over this weekend and post them up. If I had to describe them in one phrase I would say they are like army camoflouge with the green and bronze tones. I guess I'll have to consider revising their names from JAKE and ELWOOD to Jake and Elvira or something.....:S

It would certainly be interesting to see some photos. They sound very interesting. The aquatic shops around here are rather boring, they don't tend to stock a lot of strains, just your normal tiger or red Oscars, I haven't even seen any albinos or Lutinos. I suppose I could get a red and a Tiger Oscar like I used to and start breeding different strains for the shops, might think about that in the future. But then again, is it worth the hassle? Call me lazy.

Here in NJ, there is an over-abundance of all sorts of Oscar strains. Some of the Red Tigers are nothing short of spectacular lately and there seems to be partiality towards Reds, Tiger Reds and Albinos and the various strains of near albino Oscars, I wasn't after an Oscar when I walked into the pet shop a few weeks ago, although I have to admit that I have always wanted one for many many years. I just never had one because I realized t takes a big aquarium with very few if any tank mates too. However I spotted a tank full of 6" reds and then a few tanks away I spotted these two smaller cute tigers who had this amazing cream and black pattern. They were all by themselves except for one Jack Dempsey with them of similar size and I quite honestly fell in love with their personalities right there in the store. Strain didn't matter to me and it really was pot luck but I couldn't leave there without them and I couldn't leave just the one in the tank. Had it been a bunch, I might not have taken any, or I may have taken one. But these two were a pair in my eyes and because of their slight size difference, my imagination even suggested Male and Female, but I just had to take them both. I couldn't let these buddies get split up. So, whatever they are I like them allot and who would have ever guessed that it woud turn out to be a mating pair..
