AZ Steve created the topic: buying a used tank

Well guess if I was on the fence about getting a bigger tank I just fell off lol. Got my catfish today. A realy nice feather fin or lace fin Ive heard them called so now I have 3 fish that will be fairly large 1 O 1 bichir 1 featherfin so Im looking at a 125 gal tank thats used. Are there any down side to getting used? Lets assume it dosent leak lol other than that any precautions I should take..like any special way to clean to make sure no disese etc...

2 things to look at here when buying a used tank. First: Does it leak or have any signs of stress on the glass? Look at how the caulk in the corners of the glass (unles its acrylic) are formed to the corners. Its there a lot there or is there a lot missing to where it might need some put on before adding water to it. Also look for scratches in the glass and where they are located. Minor scraches can be ok, and can make the sale a little cheaper where as deep scratches can actually cause the glass to crack and leak.

Second: Look at the hardware you're getting with the tank. Is everything in working order? Are you going to have to add anything to the tank to make it fit your needs? Don't worry so much on if its dirty since most of the items in the tank can be cleaned with a little elbow grease. If it is pretty dirty though you can always use that as a bargining chip in order to get a cheaper price on everything.

I recently bought a 90 gallon fish tank on craigslist for 200 bucks. It came with about 1,000 bucks worth of hardware. He had it listed for 400 dollars, but since nothing was cleaned and it had sat for a while taking up space I was able to make a very nice deal on it. Everything worked and I ended up getting a few extra things that I didn't have before to make my life a lot easier. I had also purchased a 55 gallon tank for 150 when it was marked for 250 for some of the same reasons.

The biggest thing to make sure of though is when you're going to buy used always make sure that you're not going to spend as much on it as it would if you would have bought everything brand new. YOu should easily be able to find entire set up for 50 percent of new price, if not closer to 75 percent. The goal is to save money and be confident in your purchase. If there is ever any doubt, walk away from it and think it over for 24 hours. Most people that sell tanks on craigslist usually sit on it for a while and don't sell very fast unless its a dirt cheap price.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any other questions feel free to ask. I'm sure more people will chime in on this post.

Well Im just going to tell you like this AZ (lol) The majority of us have bought used tanks of craigs list lol!!

I love it all of my tanks are used (265, 150,110, 55, 20) None bought bran new... so it is one of the best ways to go Just need to know what to look for when you go...

if you can get them to fill it up is the best way to know the instant shape of the tank. have it filled so when you get there is is already holding water.. and to be honest if you have any DIY in you at all a lot of problems in a tank can be fixed and many of us would be more than happy to tell you how!!! so yes get on craigs list and post some results !!!! because u need a bigger tank ASAP!!! :)

The 125gal tank is kinda a mess lol I did however find a 90gal bowfrount not sure if its big enough. Heres a pic the tank measures 48inches long 28inches high and about 19 wide in frount. With the stand canopy and lights for 300 bucks, Any thoughts?

As long as it's not a press-board stand, which has a risk of collapse, yeah that's a fair price. (Used glass tanks $1 per gallon up to 75GL, $2 per gallon anything over that due to thickness of glass)
