Did a search but couldn't come up with anything. Does anyone use one of these, and do you recommend them?

I never used one , and wonder if the temp of the glass will throw of your reading a few degrees. With an in tank one you get the actual water temp.
But hopefully someone else will have more info for you.
Great question though !

Got nothing on infrared, but I have several Cora-Life digital. I know they are accurate because I put all 6 in the same tank to compare, and 5 were the same and 1 was one-tenth dif. I think they are about 12 bucks each. Worth it for accuracy, ease of use and instant readings. Rowdy fish cant break them either, unless they chew the cord or probe!

Infrared thermometers are used in RC cars and for checking where you may be losing heat in your house. I haven't tried using it on an aquarium. However for the cost, I would just get a digital thermometer to monitor the fluctuations in your fish tank, and a glass thermometer for accuracy.
