Just take everything you have back, if you have your receipt, then you should have no problem. If you look at your receipt, It should state a return policy. You should have a 30,60, or 90 day return period. The retailer gets a credit back from the manufacturer so it is in their best interest to keep you as a customer.

Yep, pain in the rear, but I think in the long term you will be happy that you got something different. You might check out some furniture resale shops for a sturdy looking piece at a cheap price.

I would flip it upside down, and use a rubber mallet or a regular hammer and a block of wood to separate the pieces.

OP, I admire you for trying to do the right thing for your little O. A lot of people would just ignore good advice and keep the O in the small tank, where it would live a short, unhealthy life. I had this happen recently to a friend of mine who tried to keep his O in a 29 gallon along with several other fish, including a pleco! In spite of my advising him several times that the tank was too small, he didn't listen and, of course, the O died. I think he finally learned his lesson.

Sorry you have having so much trouble with the shelf. I agree with Darth. I wouldn't put a 55 gal on an el-cheapo shelf I bought from lowes.

Did you see the pic I posted in one of your other threads, regarding a cheap way to make a sturdy stand with cinder blocks, some plywood, and some spray paint?

I realize it's not exactly "fine furniture", but IMO it doesn't look too bad. I'm probably going to put a 75-100 gallon tank in my basement this year, and I may make a stand similar to that one, unless I can find a good deal on a tank/stand combo.

I know you're young and the Oscar was probably an impulse buy. With livestock (and just about anything else in life) it's always better to "do your homework" before making the purchase. Saves you a lot of trouble in the long run. :) I did a lot of reading and research before I bought and stocked my 150 gallon, and still wound up making a few mistakes.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I worked at lowes for a couple of years, believe me, they'll take it back, we took literally anything back, as long as you have some kind of bar code or it isn't so many years old, they just need a way to look it up into the system, they can find it with the CC you bought it with or check # if you paid cash then they can find it with your phone number if they asked for one at time of purchase, just gotta tell them it wasn't the right shelf for the job and they'll take it back, even if it is assembled, it either goes in the back and the store get full credit for it, or they put it back on the shelf and mark it 20% off but they won't turn you down.

GL!
