Suprd71 wrote: Far from ideal, but your O must get in the 55 asap. Put him and the cats in the 55, run the existing filter in conjunction with a new one until you get a full cycle. Monitor water quality to determine water change necessities. Keep ammonia and nitrite at .25, when they get as close to 0 as possible, and you start to show nitrate, you can remove the cats. This is the main flaw with cartridge filters, they are a poor bio filter to begin with, and transferring media makes them even more useless

Do this. It's your best option then.

Yes , scrubbies will do. Shut down and drain the 20. Use all available equipment on the 55. Use 100% new water on 55, do not transfer from 20. Keep tank barebottom for a couple months, a small amount of deco, ok but no gravel.

You will have to change 50% of the water when ever your ammonia or nitrites start to have a reading of .25 or more. This will be approximately every second day maybe more often. Cloudy water will not tell you if your water is bad or not the same as clear water will not tell you if your water is bad or not. You need to test with an API freshwater master test kit. You will need to do water changes even if you don't have the python in time.

After your tank is cycled you will probably have to do two 50% water changes a week at least. In a tank that is 55 gallons it wouldn't take long to drain that much out of it so go big with the regular water changes. Do 75% twice a week and your fish will grow big and healthy. But it will be how fast your nitrates rise that will tell how often to do water changes once cycled. You can never change too much.

I have a small, 5in O in a 55. Tank has 3 filters on, fully established and cycled many moons ago. I change 75% every 3-4 days, depending on work sched. He is doing well and should be able to move up to the big boys tank sometime this spring.

Measure nitrates every 3 days. If nitrates are 20ppm, do a 50% water change.
