Wols created the topic: New Tank!!!

Almost four weeks later and my tank is finally here. I am extremely happy with it. The work is top notch!! Ive taken some pretty bad pictures to show it off.

Firstly the tank. Its a 6 x 2 x2 with a small section on the side used for the filter.

The filter.

The Filter Media... They have given me a whole heap of bio balls to use. I will try them out and see how i go. Hoping they will be ok, in combination with everything else.

Media for First Chamber

Media for the Second Chamber...with the filter wool the above photo

Third chamber is the return pump and and heaters. Pump is turning over 4500 litres per hour and heating is two by 300 watt heaters. Filter is very quiet but the pump is a little too noisy for my liking. May look at replacing it

Finally.....filled and ready to cycle. Water is a still a tiny bit cloudy, but should clear up after a day or two.

I have left the hard scape as low as possible. I'm thinking this will maximise swimming space as the whole top part will be open. Unfortunately i cant source any ammonia so will have to use some hardy fish to cycle it. Once cycled i will remove the fish before adding my oscar and co. I have measure the PH level and it is pretty high straight from the tap. Reading is 8.0. I will look at getting something to lower it.

Anyway....now the waiting begins. I will update once i the cycle is complete and i start stocking....Cant wait :) :) :)

Hey, your tank looks absolutely awesome, very natural indeed. I love the way you have placed your rocks as well, they really do look good. Look forward to seeing the fish when you finally get them in.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Thank you OFL. Was trying to get the natural look!! I added some guppies on Sunday, to get the cycle going. I have done my first ammonia test tonight and at the moment it's still reading 0ppm. Ill give it a few days and test again to see it's going.

Congrats on the new tank, looks very nice. Some guppies in that volume of water will take forever, literally, to get a cycle going. Tiny fish just wont produce enough ammonia to develop a bacteria colony big enough to occupy your significant amount of bio media. I would honestly consider the fishless cycle, and use hardware store ammonia.

Thanks Suprd71. Thats a good point and to be honest i didnt even think of it that way  . I searched everywhere and pure ammonia is extremely hard to find in Australia. Thays why i went with the guppies. Thought twenty of them will make a difference. I did some more searching and found some stuff called ammochlor. It's advertised as being used for fishless cycling. Its supposed to be a highly concentrated powdered form of ammonia and should do the job. Ive read that others have had success with it so ill buy some and give it a go.

Ok, I am now getting somewhere! I've managed to source a bottle of Dr Tim's Ammonium Chloride. Fish have been removed and re-homed. Followed the instructions and I now have an ammonia reading of 3 ppm. Will that be enough or should I add more, to take it up to 4 ppm? I have also got a different pump. This one uses less power and is a lot quieter. I have also taken the plastic bio balls out. I have bought some marine pure balls, so will be using that instead. Should work better completely submerged. Now the wait :). Hopefully all goes smooth from here on.

An ammonia level of 2-4 will work well. Careful not to hit 5 or more, cycle will stall.

Very cool look of the harscape. Sometimes less is more :) the fish will definetly be the center of the tank.

What are de mesures of the filter compartiments?
