Quick question, im worried about my canister filter, ive had it up n runnin lil over 2 months now. But in a couple weeks im gonna be gone for 2 months. Is it gonna be alright to leave the canister for 5 months. Or would it be better to clean it b4 i go? (No worries my bro in law is in charge of feeding and changing water) im worried about loosing the cycle. And i dont wanna stress the fish out any more, they spent a couple weeks at friends while we moved. Finally just got them home, our oscars still pissed he hasn't gotten his color back after 3 days.

Open the canister and rinse the media in old tank water before you go. Do it in a day or two and monitor the ammonia and nitrite. Once a basket is rinsed, make sure the clean media is submerged in old tank water as you clean the other baskets. A 5 gallon from home depot should be large enough to hold your submerged media. I've never lost a cycle cleaning a canister filter.
