danperagine created the topic: Suitable Friends for O (75gal)

So currently I have 6 green barbs and 1 baby oscar in the tank. I am rehoming the barbs this weekend. My dad being a former hobbiest wants to add a second oscar, but me finding this forum and wanting to do everything right and not wanting to a water changing champion everyday I am choosing to follow the rules. Not wanting to have a bare tank I would like to have some friends in the tank with my O. What would be some options for me?

if it was my tank i would leave the oscar alone enything big enough to not get eaten will be to much imo

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

The recommended MINIMUM tank for an Oscar is 75g. When and if Oscar reaches large size(12+ins), that tank will be too small. Oscar grows fast and although it appears that you have room for another fish, you dont. Oscar doesnt need company or pals. Other fish are competition for space and food. I have 2 baby red Oscars myself, had them 13 days. In a 5ft 120 g tank. They are fighting already. I am equipped to split them up, care for both long term. I am not sure how to make this clearer, and while you seem to get it, perhaps dad has all the say about this, BUT... one 75g tank equals one only Oscar. Period.

Tinfoil barbs might be a possible choice. They are fast swimmers and can get fair large.

Even something as small as adding 3 silver dollars?

Tinfoil barbs are too large and quick for a 75 IMO-these fish can easily reach a foot in length and are very active swimmers, 4 ft of swim space is not enough.

I think you could do 3 Sds but keep this in mind...

:bioload will be increased (although not hugely)-you will need to watch water closely and do two 75/80% water changes per week
:depending on type they can also get fairly large-do your research first
:it is usually recommended to keep Sds in schools of 6 or more
:4 ft does not allow much swim space for Sds, these are active fish, although not cramped it would be considered the minimum
:by the time your Oscar reaches 12-14 inches (it won't take long) it will want that whole tank for itself

Personally, I wouldn't do it.

I currently have 2 Sds with a juvenile Oscar in my 75 and I have to admit that they look great-however, they will not be staying for long, currently growing out 4 more and then all 6 will be off to the 150

Besides what was mentioned before can I remind that SD are herbivorous and so they need a different type of food. I Have 4 left from a group of 7 and they are OK but probably eating more meat food than they should because they grab anything that gets in the tank.

I feed both green and red pellets at all meals but I think that the Oscar and other cichlids are eating too much green and the SD too much red they like both. Maybe we should not mix fish with different type of food needs.

I am really looking to do something that will be a nice complement to the tank rather than a burden. I understand we are all like very passionate about our Oscar's and giving them everything they need, however I do feel that having at least one other Friend in the tank would be a nice addition. I am thinking at the very least giving him a Black Convict Friend? Also in my community tank I think I want to breed Black Convicts for something exciting while my O is my main boy :)

You seem intent on doing whatever suits you, regardless of advice. Thats fine, its your tank. Know this for a fact.. a breeding pair of Convicts will kill your Oscar.Maybe not in one fell swoop, but in confined space the Cons will harass and bully the Oscar to death.. eventually.

I'm actually planning to just open up a community tank and throw my barbs in there (or bring them back to LFS) and let me O have his big lair to himself.
