PeG created the topic: Silver dollar with Oscar (how large do they need to be)

Partially based on the advice on this forum I am aiming at having an Oscar together with a Group of silver dollars. To avoid my silver dollars becoming dinner I purchased them about 6 months ago and I am planning on adding a small Oscar once the silver dollars are big enough. Since the Oscar will grow a lot faster than the silver dollars my question is about how large they need to be before the Oscar is added to the tank. The silver dollars were about an inch when purchased and all except for one is now slightly above 2 inches. For unknown reasons one of them isnt growing at all.

silver dollars will be safe as long as it doesn't fit to the oscar's mouth.
since they are skittish and fast swimmers, oscar will have difficult time
chasing them... once they become familiar to each other, oscar will
leave them alone...

Initialt it wont be a problem but I wanted to make sure that the Oscars mouth doesnt grow fast enough to create a problem since the silver dollars seem to be relatively slow growing (as compared to an Oscar).

i had kept an oscars (3 pcs) and 6 SD in a 120 gal tank for 3 years... the SD were outgrown by the oscars but never had an incident of losing any. eventually, my friend took all sd and gave me his oscar in return.
