I can't believe it has been 2 years since I got Merry. I would not have this fish if not for this site. I wish some of the people like Nina, Jnet, Eddie, JasonR, roxy, and others who really helped me out were still active here. Every time someone has moved on it has been sad, but some one always steps up and continues the mission of this site. OFL is home to the most knowledgeable, and friendliest fish keepers out there, and Penn is incredibly generous with his time hosting this site. Anyway here is Merrys first video(I think), and the most recent.

She looks amazing. Didn't realise how big she was until I took a look at the video showing the whole tank.

Merry is not a little fish, but if I had really listened to the advice given here from day one, he/she would probably be massive. I kept him in a 55 with another O that almost killed him, he had ick twice, and I probably underfed him for about a year. I way over read into the don't over feed mantra for all my fish. Even with all those mistakes, keeping decent water in the tank is probably the only reason I can post a pic of him.

"I way over read into the don't over feed mantra for all my fish." How much were you feeding? I'm a bit wary of doing the same thing myself, that's all.

I fed enough to get a slight bulge in his abdomen, but never to the point he looked really plump. I have seen a lot of pics from others on many sites, that have really good growth rates, that show some fat fish. Honestly, no matter how long I do this, I will probably never feed my fish the way some do. I really think I may have been a little to conservative, but most cichlids will eat way more than is healthy if given the chance.

Man, that's a beautiful fish. Great veil tail. You could put a picture of Merry(sp?) on the cichlid profiles and information under astronotus ocellatus ... there's still no veil there. Where did you find this oscar btw? Great videos.

I will try and get a really good picture of him/her to post, but if I am anywhere near the tank the fish is in feeding mode, so it hard to get a good one.

@UNC, I got the fish at a smaller chain store called Pet Supplies Plus. They have about the same tank space that you would see in a Wal Mart. I had seen a picture of a veil on this site, and was pretty sure that is what I was looking at even though Merry was probably only abou 1.5" at the time. I did not buy him then even though he was only $9.99, since I was cycling a 55 for another oscar. The other oscar was named Pippin and had Hexamita, and is the reason I joined this forum. I told my wife about this amazing little fish, and she wanted to see him, so the next night we went back by the store before dinner and he was still there. She said get him! I explained everything that I had been learning on this site(this might need to go in fishy confessions) and that it was not really an option, so we left the store and went to eat.

Well the Mediterranean restaurant had a draft special on a really stout beer from Abita brewery called Andy Gator, and after a few we were talking about the fish again. We ended up back at the store, and bought the fish. I had convinced myself (with my marine biologist wife's encouragement) that I could keep Pippin and the new fish in the huge 55 I had just gotten. Since Pippin was named after the troublesome Hobbit from LOTR it just made sense to call him Merry(Meriadoc Brandybuck). Pippin did not make it, so the name seems a little silly now, but he/she is generally a very outgoing fish, so it kind of fits.
