Also, he definitely is eating the plants a bit from time to time. I can tell because sometimes there's green stringy bits sticking out of his anus with pieces of the leaf still on it. There's a big wad of them that float in a bundle.

Update

Just went to the LFS (it's a small family owned place, been here over 30 years) tested the water and they said I might have a faulty test kit. They read my water at 0 nitrate. He said with as often as I change my water, and with the plants in my tank, he's not surprised that I have 0 nitrates.

Thoughts anyone?

lol, I would trust the 5 reading over the 0. You cant have zero in a fully cycled tank. It would take an extreme, and I mean jungle setting, amount of plants, and daily 100%(impossible to do) water changes to maintain an under 5 level. Nitrate is the final stage in the nitrogen cycle and with properly functioning bio filtration, its produced round the clock. Even with pleco gone, you still have a medium/large cichlid in a small water volume. Changing the water more often and larger volumes are giving your fish a healthier tank. Keep that up and dont be so concerned with these false nitrate readings. I suspect the shop used test strips? If not their kit is more faulty than yours.

He used a liquid, not sure of the brand, Hagen I think? 5ml water a few drops of this and that. Supposed to read clear to red. It didn't even turn a slight shade of pink, it remained clear the whole time I was in the shop. And his test kit works, I'm sure it does because I wasn't the only person getting water tested there. Another guy came in and got tested too, his got a fair reading on it, mine got nothing.. I'm confused... Lol

You're confused?? I'm losing my s**t with this one, lol! I must know your secret to having minimal nitrate. I have similar sized fish, alone in larger tanks with way more filtration. My tap water is among the best on the planet. I chew thru almost 2000 gals a week of water keeping parameters superb. I'm sincerely happy for you and Mo, but damn, this cant be! Keep up the good work.

Just for grins and giggles I'll retest aaaaagain lol I'm also going to compare to the strips I have cuz why not, they're just sitting there and I'll never really trust strips anyway, just a curiosity. If you'd like I'll try and make a short video and post a link to it.

Retested with liquid and strips, the only thing so far that read any nitrate is my liquid test. Though strips aren't very good, they seem to match close with my liquid test, all but the nitrate of course, the strip couldn't read any..... I'm not going to worry about it. Of course I'll be keeping a record of it every time I change water just because I'm persnickety about everything lol

Turns out bananas and oranges are a hit for Mo, especially bananas (and holy crap do those get messy) the orange clearly wasn't the favorite of the two but he ended up eating it anyway (glutton lol) also tossed 2 or 3 of his main food after he finished the orange piece. Mind you they were smaller pieces just to see if he would eat them (and how much mess it makes, filter cleared up the mess)
