DMD123 created the topic: Vacation time again

Ive only been back on this forum for a little while now so many of you guys dont know this but I go on vacation every year to visit family in Ecuador. Thought I would share a little bit about the fish hobby down there.

For a country that has some of the most sought after fish like the green terror and festae you would think the aquarium hobby would be awesome down there.... well its not, totally lame. We visited a store that was comparable to a Walmart up here and they did carry some nice looking tanks:

Very European inspired and modern looking with a lot of stuff made in China.

How about the fish? Most of the stores that carry fish have lame stuff like goldfish and other super common tropical. You see a better selection at your local Walmart. My dentist down there has a tank built in:

You can see he has a nice selection but pretty common stuff. This is the best I have seen down there so far.

This will be my fourth time down and the last time I went I got to try 'cuy'. Yep that is the famous Ecuador dish we know as guinea pig. It does NOT taste like chicken!

So this year dont have any major plans to really see anything down there but if I have something interesting I will share pics with you guys.

I decided to add these pics from the last trip, they were at a place called 'Parque Condor'. They had lots of large predatory birds there, very cool!

The eagle is gulping down a cute little chick that was used to lure it back in.

Nothing more boring than sitting through someones vacation pics....

I am surprised when I see certain vendors selling for example wild caught Green Terror from Ecuador when getting the fish out is pretty much impossible from what I see, unless they are smuggling them out.

Where my family is at is more in the mountainous area so really no access to any of the cool tropical fishes there.

That is really surprising, maybe people there look at goldfish as an exotic, and the fish we dream about are boring to them. I live in an area rich in bio diversity, and there are probably as many wc fish species available to me in local waterways as anywhere on the planet. I have considered harvesting and keeping local fish known as darters, but have never done it. I hope you have a great trip, and cool pics.

I guess it would be being excited about having a sunny or rainbow trout in my tank for them having a green terror in theirs so that makes sense. Although their common fish are so beautiful u would think the hobby would be a bigger deal.

One of my friends down there has offered to take me fishing on of these trips.... for trout. Yep thats right trout fishing in Ecuador. He lives in Cuenca and with a little hike you can find some nice trout fishing spots. I might take him up on the offer one of these days but I really want to visit a piece of the Amazon or the Galapagos one day.

Trout fishing with light grade rod reel line is very fun. When u do it with a setup built for large fish it's just plain lame tho. You just reel it in like you are pulling an inadimat object in with a pully. With a small rod and light grade line they will give you a heck of a fight.

I grew up on light tackle and fishing in streams where most of the fish were smaller. Lots of fun for sure.
