OFL created the topic: Uncovering Aliens on Discovery

Anyone seen Uncovering Aliens on the Discovery Channel? It is basically the equivalent to Finding Bigfoot. You've got a group of people, a guy and a woman who are very sceptical about aliens, and then a guy who thinks every thing that moves in the sky is an alien spaceship.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Bigfood is just for drunken and lonley people with special needs but alians are real. The milky way has about 100 Million Stars and there are also about 100 Million more galaxys out there so if you calculate a bit there are potential 10 trillian Stars (suns) out there, this in in Numbers

10.00.000.000.000.000.000.000 and this on a distance of 20 Billion lightyears.

What i don't believe is that it will be possible to reach alian live. An human would need alone half his life to reach Pluto let alone our nearest Star Sirius that is just 8.5 lightyears away.

With the most powerfull rocket it would need 236000 earth years to reach the edges of the Sirius System... so if you do this trip better take your mp3 Player with you.

Science is always improving. Maybe one day, we'll cruise around like on Star Trek. You never know.

And Bigfood is out there. We usually go to our local pizza place for it, but everyone's a bit different. ;)

Keeper of the Food Pellets of Malekith the Never Accursed, Lover of Bubbles and Airstones, and Beloved of the Rogue Violetta.

Throw yourself in- use the wrong words, try different foods, kiss random fish. It's an adventure!

I agree.... out of all those possible stars. There has to be atleast one planet that has just enough distance for its sun, magentic fields...all of the aspects that would be needed for life

I rather liked the Discovery and History channels. I just had to learn to keep my objections to in my head, lol.

In the US, science is very poorly taught in schools. Even when I was in school, astronomy wasn't taught. By chance, as a teenager I read 'COSMOS' by Carl Sagan and 'Einstein's Universe' by Isaac Asimov and have had a love for this branch of science ever since.

I watched an episode on YouTube after OFL made the original post. I understand the bigfoot reference ... it's just like one of those shows. What's sad is that a lot of people believe this rubbish, or at least think ... 'Oh well, it could be.' A lot of people believe that aliens are responsible for abductions, livestock mutilations, crop circles, memory implants, etc. I would bet more people believe in that stuff than in bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster. Yet, I would think far fewer people (in the US) believe in aliens in the sense that toom is speaking of.

What toom is talking about is based on sound science. It's strange ... you can say the word 'alien' and it will mean different things to different people. Some people will think about a government alien hybrid program, while others will think about the number of stars in the universe.

Anchient aliens is one of my favorite shows, and I believe that the likelihood that we are not alone is very good. Black holes were just speculation a few decades ago, and worm holes may be real. The quantum physics guys may be able to come up with a way to travel to distant systems sooner than later. As soon as I can get a handle on the everyday things here on Earth, I will devote my limited intellectual power to the cause.

Sorry, I couldn't resist :P

On a more serious note, this is a good read: news.nationalgeographic.com.au/news/2015/01/150106-kepler-goldilocks-exoplanets-universe-space-science/

The amount of earth-like planets being found is increasing all the time. It's quickly getting to the stage where these earth-like planets (planets in the habitable zone of their stars) are common enough that finding extra-terrestrial life is more of a 'when' question than an 'if'.

The Goldilocks Zone is what NASA calls it.
