MetalHead88 created the topic: i found this funny

this isn't an o tank but i didnt know where else to put it. i picked up another tank a "starter kit" to raise my jd babies in. the filter is crap, but i took care of that.

the thing i found funny was the directions for setting up a tank that i read just for the hell of it. it gives a day by day instructions on what to do to setup the tank for a month.

day 1 : consists of filling the tank and decorating it and such

day 2 : "continue to let the aquarium cycle"

day 3 : "purchase just 1/3 of the total number of fish your aquarium will support"

on day 3, with brand new everything, they got ya adding fish. i feel bad for the people who are following these directions...

you can add fish to a new tank, as long as the tank size to ...amount of fish .... fish size...and pump are correct. I have done this with a new tank, 2 babbie oscars in a 50Gallon tank.... To truely cycle a tank you will need some fish crap in your new tank... small amounts at first. watch your water paras... and all should be ok. I also done the same on a much larger scale when i moved house but this took some work. ...But I may add, I have had oscars for some 5 yrs. Please dont take this out of context and add many fish to a new tank or you will end up with DEAD FISH ! Ps. I must have done something right as said fish are now 12inc & 11 inc.

off course it depends on the type of fish. You can set up a community tank this way if you choose the right fish. For example you can start a tank with danios

My opinion is the instructions should say consult your local shop after a few days on when to stock with fish (altho the shops are not that much better)

i really wouldn't use oscars to cycle a tank. there are other types of fish such as danios that can withstand ammonia and nitrates much bettter than o's. their proness to hith make them a poor choice for cycling. i would consider using other fish that are expendable for this and not center piece fish

Warning..I will offend you at some point!!!

I heard lettuce and other plant matters is a good way to jump start a tank. All you need is waste in there, food, debree from another tank, performing a fishless cycle is better, you end up with less problems vs disease and you could end up with some kind of bacteria thats hard to kill no matter how many times you clean the tank you would have to start new again.

I ended up having to treat an oscar for fin rot in the same tank that I treated some danios for fin rot 2 months previous.
