misplacedsooner created the topic: is this sand okay?

Im assuming so but since Ive never had an oscar thought Id ask.oh, the sand, pool filter sand like I use for my mutis and some other tanks, its heavier than the playsand and cleans nicely and looks great. now if anyone saw my intro you know this was a nasty tank I rescued sunday and did many massive water changes to to start to get the tank up to snuff. filters had not been run for Im guessing a week. so would it be wise to wait for a bit to get some bacteria growth happening or can I just go for it? I found about 3-4 in. of gravel in the tank over ugf plates that Ive since removed.found several coins, leafs, sticks and various other yuckies in there too. as was stated to me the weight of the gravel is takeing water space, not sure how many pounds 3-4 in. of gravel is but Im guessing alot,I think a nice thin layer of the sand would look better and be lighter and take much less water space, what do you guys and gals think? thanks

I should think the sand you are referring to is okay, I'm not aware that they add things like lime to it. Just give it a very good wash and put no more than 1 inch of sand in, you could even go a little late less if you want. Okay, the bottom of the tank might get exposed sometimes but that is not the end of the world. The bottom of my tank is showing at the moment, the problem is the catfish and ClownLoach will fidget and expose the bottom of the tank

but should I wait awhile before I do this since I did such an intense cleaning? were talking I took out 18 buckets(5 gal.) of the blackest water in the world and with the filters not running for a week, will I damage him or is there already no good bacteria left??

You really are starting afresh now, all bacteria will have died in the filtration so you will be cycling from the very beginning. You can put everything in your tank, remember that a certain amount of bacteria does live in substrate, rocks, and probably anything that is in the tank, so put that in at the very beginning.

the gravel was the only thing left that had any bacteria as the tank I bought/rescued was not running but had the oscar,a good sized jd,a big fm, and 2 giant plecs. the jd moved to my 125 and is doing good, the fm also went to the 125 but my synspilus killed him while I was working on the oscar tank. the plecs I gave away.anyhow as I said the gravel has most likely the only source of bacteria, how much it contains is in question after I cleaned it pretty well but that is what Im looking to change. the tank came with 2 whisper 30-60 filters that were total sludge, I cleaned them out and put in new carbon. I have another smaller filter running on my 125 that Im getting ready to switch should I put it on the oscar tank to help seed?

If you are adding a filter that has been running for a while on another tank, this will almost instantaneously cycle your tank. Just be sure but when you fill the tank, you put some water condition and then to kill all chlorine. You will have to keep an eye on the water conditions for the first couple of weeks and feed sparingly. But if there is a good bacteria colony in the new filter that you are going to put on the tank, that will save you weeks of cycling. You mustn't cycle a tank with an Oscar though, you may end up with future health problems. Always cycle with relatively cheap hardy fish. Apart from Oscars not being the most suitable fish for cycling, they don't come cheap either.

this tank came with the oscar and I had no place to put him while I do this so he is still in the tank he came in.

Why can't you put the Oscar in the 125 gallon tank? If you have to cycle the tank with the Oscar, you'll just have to take it easy and two water changes every other day so the ammonia doesn't get very high. I would advise you to use a product called "prime" visit their website and read about this product. www.seachem.com/products/product_pages/Prime.html

Prime converts ammonia into a non-toxic form. The company that makes this product suggests that it can be used when cycling a tank. I have to say that I have used it recently. I have had a slight water problem whereas I was getting an ammonia reading. I used it in my tank. I haven't however used it when cycling a tank.

When you see a small filter running on your 125, just how small is this filter? If it isn't rated up to 55 gallon tank, then the tank went be cycled, it will help a little bit, but you will still have to cycle and be very careful with the ammonia levels.

I think the small filter is like a penguin 170. the oscar in the 125 might not be a good idea as my synspilums dont like new fish very well so Im not sure how they would react to each other and I am stocked pretty heavily with severums(3)the jd,a couple of large synodonis cats and various smaller ca s. although I have given some thought to making some switches to get him in there.until yesterday I wasnt sure if I was gonna keep him or not but he is kinda growing on me now. if I do decide to switch him over, I ll make a list of whats in the 125 and decide what to leave in there with the oscar and what to go to the 55, also will have to re-aquascape both tanks.
