OFL created the topic: Looking for a large piece of wood

At some stage, my eight-foot tank will arrive, when they pull their fingers out of their backside and finish it. I want a very large piece of wood. Problem is, I'm having problems finding some. Does anyone in United Kingdom know where I can obtain large pieces of wood that is suitable for aquariums?

Well I am not from the UK, but I have been there. The place I was can't remember the name of it. But anyways, all around the shores of the river was great pieces of driftwood. I was wishing I could bring some home with me. Larger pieces you can cut with a very fine bladed saw to minimize loss, and boil the pieces. To reassemble, you get dowel rod, and drill corresponding holes, slightly tight, and the wood will swell when wet...

It depends on how big you want. Around my way the shops sell a decent sized bit that is about £30(bout 18in by 3 by 10)

I can't get no sleep

If possible, I am looking for a piece that is around four or 5 foot long. Whether that's being a bit optimistic, I know not. I have also contacted the National Marine aquarium to ask them where they get their stuff from. They have huge tanks with big piece of the wood in, they must get their tank material from somewhere

I dread to think how much the postage would be on a piece the size I want from the United States. I've got someone who can get really big pieces, it should look good when it is finished

i did think that!!! its a shame you cant get bits that are washed up on the beach! i was walking along the beach this weekend and saw some really wicked pieces but its not worth the risk of introducing some disease into your tank!!!!

No, you shouldn't put any old bits of wood in your tank. That is a recipe for disaster. I would rather pay a little extra for something I know will be okay

It doesn't matter how I locate this piece of wood, having it delivered through the post isn't going to be straightforward. I want a piece that is around 4 feet long, it would probably weigh 20 or 30 lbs, I would hate to think how much that would cost to send through the post. Then you have got the problem of wrapping it up. I think I will keep my fingers crossed that my guy can get some, he says he can get huge pieces, tree trunks. Don't think I'll go that big..
