Pinoy Oscar created the topic: Tank Sizes, Water Changes and Suitable filters.

I just wanted to ask, what kind of filters, and what amount of water changes would keep an Oscar healthy and growing well in the ff. sized tanks?

55 gallon
60 gallon
75 gallon
90 gallon
If you could please specify the turnover rate needed by the filters, also how big he filters should be?
Then how many water changes a week, and how much must be changed to ensure proper growth of the Oscar.
Thanks guys!

For canister filters you want the flow to be 5 times the water volume or you want it to be rated for twice the aquarium size. So if you have 2 canisters for a 100 g aquarium, the total flow rate is either 500g per hour or 2 canisters rated for 100 aquarium gallons.

When using a sump, you want the size of the sump to be at least 20% of the aquarium volume.

If using a hang on the back filters, the total flow rate should be 10 x the aquarium volume.

Keep the nitrates below 20ppm. If you cant get a test kit to determine the nitrate level of your aquarium, change a MINIMUM of 5 gallons per inch of fish within a 7 days.

You can never change enough water, no matter the tank size & filtration. For any large cichlid, no less than 75% 1X per week, along w/ a thorough gravel vacuuming.

Rock has you covered on turnover rate.

Would 50% twice a week in a 55 gallon be ok? With 100 gallon per hour turnover on the filter

Please just know that any tank 75GL & below(55 being absolute bare minimum) is suitable for one Oscar only.

What type of filter(brand name please) are you contemplating?
