Hi, I am a first time Oscar owner. I bought a 90 gallon tank on Craigslist two weeks ago that came with one 6 inch Tiger Oscar, two Purple Parrots (both 2 inches ) and one eel. All seem to be happy and healthy. The filter that came with the tank is an Aqua Clear 110. I ordered an Eheim Classic 250-2213 that will arrive in two days and I have a bubbler as well. I have been doing a 50 percent water change and a 50 percent gravel vacuum every second day and each time I add Prime for 90 gallons. The heater is a 400 watt. The test reading is: Nitrite 5, Ammonia .25, and Ph 7. Please let me know what I need to add. Do I need more filter coverage? Since I have not received the Eheim 250, I could exchange it and upgrade. Is the tank overstocked? I never see the eel because he stays under the gravel that also came with the tank. I love the Oscar and the Purple Parrots seem to really like him as we'll. I want the conditions to be perfect and I appreciate any advice you can offer.

Welcome to our community. When you bought all the equipment, was the filtration switched off in between transportation, or did you pick up the Tank with fish, take it straight to your house and set it up within a fairly short period of time? Fortunately Prime should detoxify the ammonia and nitrite so please keep that up. Not sure about the eel, they do sometimes need fairly specific conditions. Please let us know exactly how you set things up so we can help you.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Hello and welcome. Your level of nitrite is alarming. Are you certain its nitrite and not nitrate? You should be monitoring all 3 levels, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Keep up the water changes until you are certain of all readings. Ideally you are looking for 0 ammonia and nitrite, and keep a steady level of low nitrate, that being under 20. Your 90g may be at its limit with 4 fish. If you are willing, that tank will make a great home for Oscar alone. AC 110 is a great filter, especially for mechanical, and adding a canister will give you good coverage for biological filtration.

i would at least re home the eel depending on what kind it is it could grow anywhere from 5 inches to 3+ feet long

Don't dwell on what went wrong. Instead focus on what to do next

I have no problem rehoming the eel. I'm pretty scared to look for it under the gravel. Who would want an eel? Any advice as to who I can give it to?

Need pictures!!!!

After some research I've discovered that prime can cause false positives on ammonia readings. Just tossing that out there.

I'm sure there is a local fish store will take the eel off your hands.
