"I don't recommend beef heart for oscars."

Amen to that....but I would go so far as to advise against BH for any cichlid.....it will put growth on your fish, but cichlids aren't built to digest cow meat.....earthworms are a great choice for cichlids.

The beef heart was only for the discus? Never said was going to feed it to oscars. I never new that though for oscars good info.

We'll I guess I will be seeing what I can do maybe a oscar is not for me as I would like to get a fish and not buy more filtration I would rather get discus for the price of canisters. Thanks

Stick with one oscar and a school of silver dollars. In the long run, you won't have to buy anymore filters.

Discus are cichlids, same family as Oscars, Jaguar, Dovii, Festae......& just FYI....a LOT of breeders feed Discus beef-heart to maximize growth, but as a person who kept & bred them years ago, I never fed them beef-heart.....too fatty.....again, not particularly good for any cichlid.....I chopped up earthworms for Discus & gave them shredded FD krill, blood worms, TetraBits, & Hikari pellets, among other things.

If you don't want to spend the money on Discus, how about Angelfish? Here's a very reputable breeder I've used:

www.angelsplus.com/

Also, I know one of our Mods, BigKen was breeding them, you could contact him & see what he has.

Yes discus are cichlids. Already new that. Beef heart is only fatty if you do not pre pare it properly. It is very good for discus helps to grow ect. Maybe not for other cichlids.

Hello and welcome from a fellow Canadian.. I know that equipment seems very costly, and in most places it is... however, I have found a quality supplier that comes very close to American prices on most everything. If you like, send me a pm and I will point you in the right direction to save some serious coin on quality equipment. I am in Northern Ontario.

Not stating you didn't...but although beefheart does put good growth rates on cichlids, I dislike it solely based on the fact that cichlids' digestive systems aren't designed to process bovine protein efficiently.

Personally I think beef heart is great for discus from all the research and people 20+ years breeders and hobbyist that have recommended it. As for other cichlids I wouldn't know lol.

Well with that being said and more on topic. I got my first tiger oscar. only had him/her for a few hours was the biggest there. there was 2 albino tigers and they were getting picked on by him/her. Not sure on size but it looks like 3-4inch.

So with what I have set up and my oscar what other fish can go with it? I will be trying to get another filter ASAP as soon as I can afford it. I am located in BC Canada.
