I much prefer sand over gravel any day. It is 10 times easier to clean, although it does take some people while to get used to cleaning it without sucking it all out of the tank. The problem with gravel is that crap and dirt can easily find its way underneath the gravel and can be easily missed whilst gravel vacing. The other advantage I used to find is that that was easily visible. The biggest disadvantage with using white sand is if you have fish like plecs that produce a lot of waste. If you have a particularly big one, it doesn't take very long before your tank looks like a whole football team has discarded their shoelaces in it. Obviously green stands out on a white substrate say can look a little bit unsightly. Having said that, the pros of having sand far outweigh the cons in my opinion.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

OK, cool. Does it come in a variety of colors? I have seen photos of Oscar tanks with black sand and I think it looks really nice.

you can get different shades of white/tan depending on the manufacturer or you can get Black Diamond blasting sand which as the name says is black. The real benefits of sand over gravel are sand is much easier to clean and its cost, mine was on sale I got 150lbs of the stuff for $12.

I didn't realize it is so cheap. That's great. The Black Diamond blasting sand sounds better to me.

I've heard of tahitian black moon sand, what's that?

Black diamond is blasting media its actually coal slag, its great as long as you are not keeping geophagus species and some smaller catfish. Due to it being blasting media its quite abrasive and will tear up the barbles of catfish like cories and gills of geos

Heres my 90g that I just changed to black diamond last night

I used Ace Hardware pool filter sand, and yes, I started getting a brown algae problem about a month after I first set it up.

12" Plecostomus pretty much cured that. Took him about a week to make everything look like it had been scrubbed with a steel wool pad.

He's getting lazy now, though. Probably getting too used to me feeding him whether he works or not. Ungrateful wretch.
