Thanks Ken , I'll look for some in that grit. It looks nice with the black background.

i have both sand and river rocks/gravel and i prefer sand .....if you're not planning on a planted tank.......due to the rooted plants cant hook onto sand....

but with all the benefits: poop, ease of cleaning, cheap, and great looking weighs over gravel .....

Plants don't really appeal to me, I want a fairly clean looking tank. I think sand is going to be the way to go for me.

Hopefully I'm not being rude by jumping in on this thread but is this blasting media the stuff you're talking about? I'm planning on switching to sand as soon as it gets warm out so I've been reading over threads like this looking for tips.

Yes that's it. I ended up using Mystic white sand. www.hellotrade.com/ussilica/mystic-white-ii-brand-pool-filter-sand.html

Ok cool. I like the pool filter sand, I actualy have about a 1/2 bag open around here somewhere. But I think I'm liking the black as I have a lutino oscar and the white gravel i have doesn't make him stand out at all.

I know this thread is a bit old but figured its a good place for my question... I am thinking about going with sand for a substrate and trying to decide on filtration. Has anyone heard of sand causing issues with fx5/6 ?

I have an FX5 and pool filter sand in my tank. I have no issues. I only take my filter apart for cleaning 2 times a year and I find a bit of small grains of sand in there and that's it. I keep the bottom of the intake strainer 4 or so inches from the top of the sand. Place some decor or rocks by the strainer as well to keep fish from digging and spitting sand in that area.

Go do a water change - the solution to pollution is dilution.
