flipfloppin created the topic: 125 gallon stocking question

I'm just about finished with the fishless cycle. Its been 28 days today and I'm close. The original plan was for 1 oscar 1 severum and some silver dollars. I have seen lately some say the Silver dollars can reach 8 inches. I really wanted to keep my tank bio load to a minimum. Does that sound like too much? I would be happy with 1 oscar 1 severum and a catfish if need be. Another question is, the fish will likely be in the 3 inch range and I need to know if they will provide enough ammonia on their own to sustain the bacteria. It's a 125 gallon and they will be smaill in size to start with. Any thoughts?

Sorry buddy 125 Gal is only good for two fish.

Oscar and Sevs are a good combo, but again fish do have character and you might just get the only oscar hating sev in the world or vice versa.

My O and sev have a scrap every now and then but they get along pretty well.

If your cycle is complete then yes the bacteria will be there. Some might die off because as you say your fish will be small and not produceing as much as waste; but there will be enough there to deal with what your fish produce.

As your fish grow so will your bacterial colony. Its a self regulating system in that sense.

Sorry can we just check your tank is cycled, could you give us a few readings?

I have 10 silver dollars in my 125 with an oscar. The biggest females are around 6 inches and don't seem to be growing anymore. There are many varieties of silver dollar and some do get bigger. All 10 of mine have close to the same bioload as one oscar but not quite. The bioload was heavier in my tank with 2 oscars. So I would go with either the silver dollars or the sev but not both. The sev will have roughly the same bioload as the oscar.

Yeah, I doubt 2 3" cichlids will produce 4ppm of ammonia every 24 hours in a 125g tank.

So would 2 sevs and a few silver dollars be too much for this size tank? Just wanna make sure its a healthy tank.

2 sevs and a few sd like 6+ would be doable

I think so too. I find sev's slightly less bioload then oscars. My tank creates 5 ppm of nitrates a day and I find that's manageable. Allows you to go a few days between water changes. I think you'd get around the same with that stocking, plus with the extra 40 gallons minus media room, in the sump, you'll have a bit more water to work with.
