blip30 created the topic: Cycle tank with 2 oscars

Hey guys i used to have an Oscar fish along time ago and i really enjoyed keeping unfortunately i lost him in a massive earthquake....
3 years on i think its time to start the hobby up again!
i just purchased a 250L second hand fish tank that i got for a good price! :) i plan on getting 2 tiger Oscars the pet shop sells some that are about 6cm long.
i understand that i will need a bigger tank down the track and i plan on getting a custom one build to suit there needs. anyway i have set up the tank and its all ready to go have fit a new canister (filters 700 L an hour) filter to the tank with some media from my established axolotl tank. my question is can i get my Oscars in a week? i asked the guy at the pet store and he said it would be fine to do so just to do lots of water changes and check my ammonia doesn't get too high.

Cheers, blip

if you ave an established tank with an oxolot, why not split all the media in there and run the
two filter in parallel with the oxolot tank... that way will expedite the cycle of your filter and
will be ready in a week time... that is better than cycling your tank with the new oscar...

" i asked the guy at the pet store and he said it would be fine to do so just to do lots of water changes and check my ammonia doesn't get too high."

Of course he did......he's in the business of selling fish & aquarium supplies. Having kept cichlids for over 42 years, I can assure you he is not being truthful with you. :pinch:

If you use Oscars as the ammonia supplier for the BB( beneficial bacteria) for your filters, you will run a great risk of them:

1) Dying. Oscars demand pristine water, & are an extremely poor choice for cycling a filter.

2) Stunting and/or contracting HITH/LLE. Stocking for cichlid aquariums is based on adult size...the "they will be fine for now" line of stocking an aquarium is a myth. That aquarium breaks down to a little over 66GL, which is barely enough for one Oscar, regardless of current size.

Oscars, regardless of current size, put out a tremendous amount of waste. Having 2 in a tank of that size will mean that they will be swimming in their own waste.

If you wish to do a "fish-in" cycle, I would recommend that you use Giant Danios....they are actually a very hardy fish, & will tolerate the ammonia/nitrite spikes exponentially better than an Oscar.

After the filters are cycled, I would recommend you either get 1 Oscar, or wait until you get a MUCH bigger tank. Oscars grow VERY fast, & you simply do not have room for 2. Also, there is no guarantee that they will get along....Oscar, like the majority of cichlids, are territorial, & will more than likely fight.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

I can really only echo what other people have said. Do not recycle your tank using Oscars, get a bunch of small community fish. There is a list on our "how to cycle a tank" article.

I have very, very little faith in fish stores nowadays. Most of them haven't got a Scooby how to look after Oscars and therefore will hand out erroneous information that can only end up in disaster. If you want to know how to look after Oscars, then you are in the right place

That lots of people on here have one or two Oscars, how many, I have absolutely no idea

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

Those with 2 Oscars keep at a minimum a 110g aquarium.

Quick answer is no, a healthy Oscar grows an inch a month, sometimes more. Your tank is good for 1 Oscar only, regardless of current or future size.

Let me refer you from parts of my previous post that apply here & answer that question:

2) Stunting and/or contracting HITH/LLE. Stocking for cichlid aquariums is based on adult size...the "they will be fine for now" line of stocking an aquarium is a myth. That aquarium breaks down to a little over 66GL, which is barely enough for one Oscar, regardless of current size.

You do seem hell-bent on putting 2 Oscars in a tank that in all actuality is only barely satisfactory for one. I have a Red Oscar that I've had for a few months by itself in a 55GL, & he's rapidly outgrowing it...I will have to get him a bigger tank @ some point in the very near future. And that is one Oscar by himself. I would strongly recommend you have patience & wait to get that bigger tank before getting 2 Oscars....when something goes wrong in a smaller tank, it goes wrong QUICK.......a bigger tank, you may have time to correct it......the bigger the tank the better for cichlids that grow as big as Oscars do.
