Haha, really? How about that :silly: I'll have a peek at them, then.

Thanks for the tip!

Glad to help. If price is right, go for their biggest, Rena xp4, or now called Filstar xpxl. 4 trays, holds lotsa bio, does a good job with mechanical too.

Ugh, nevermind. I assumed Rena was here due to a couple of Aussie cichlid forums mentioning them, but no. Dammit. Seems that replacement parts are floating around though, which is a plus. This is tempting, however: There's a Rena xp4 on ebay for $170 USD, but I'm assuming it doesn't come with filter media, and the postage is $110 AUD :pinch:

There's also an XP3 I can see that someone's selling for $56 - and the shipping's only $40. That's a hell of a lot better than $500 odd for the fluval! Only thing is that it's a bit smaller, and a couple of the lid clips are broken. Doesn't seem too bad though "Used item, two of the clamps that lock the the lid on are broken when removed. However, they seem secure when locked into place."

Good price on the xp3.. beware when it says broken lid clips. Could be the clips, could be the hinges, which are a moulded part of the canister itself

From the pics it looks like 2 of the hinges are busted. There's another one for $55, but it's ~$110 for shipping again, and it doesn't come with any filter material, hosing or piping. No biggie on the filter material but I'm not sure where I'd go getting the hosing/piping. I'd have to look around.

Haha, most likely. There's a fluval fx6 that just got listed on the aussie ebay for $350 with free postage. I'll keep an eye out for a Filstar in good condition, but with postage so much from the US I'm wondering if I'll get a better deal than that... hmm. I'll keep looking. I found a 7.5ft x 2.5ft x 2.5ft tank (320 US gallons) for $1300! That... doesn't help me at all. I literally couldn't fit it in my house.

Quick question: I've been doing 50% water changes twice a week for both tanks, but I was wondering if doing a smaller ~20% water change daily would have a similar effect? I only ask because the silver dollars act as though I've murdered their families or called them mean names whenever I do a big water change (pretend they're plant leaves, get "stuck" under driftwood etc). The oscar sulks like you wouldn't believe as well. Ugh. But yeah, this water change calculator tells me it'll work as well: www.hamzasreef.com/Contents/Calculators/EffectiveWaterChange.php but I want to double check. I'm just wondering if smaller but more regular water changes might be a bit less stressful for them.

On a more amusing note, I put a couple of fake plants and a bit of driftwood (that's old enough it no longer releases tannins) into the RD tank after I did her water change today. She wasn't pleased at all where I put one of the fake plants and literally dragged it across the tank  I've seen the after-effects of her rearranging, but that's the first time I caught her in the act. This plant was a big one too! Anyway, she was super happy with her results judging by how pink she became, though even as I type this I can hear *tink* *tink* from the gravel she's moving around.

You can do daily water changes if that suits you better, makes no dif to fish. w/c does not stress them out as far as water volume goes, its more likely the disruption of their area that makes them pout. Doing every day may pee them off even more!

I need to get a python or something similar - doing water changes the old way at the moment, and it is quite time consuming lol. I'll give daily a shot for a few days and see how they go, but if they all keep acting so melodramatic I'll stick to 2x week.
