Mixing cichlids is always a coin toss. Mixing mated pairs is guaranteed fight time unless you have huge space for each pair to have its own territory to claim. A 70 something gallon tank will not work for that. Nics do well with milder SA's, but tankspace is the key. I still support the idea of a single Jack Dempsey. Male that could possibly top out at 10ins will be good for life in 70ish gallons. Some report they don't do well alone, its been my experience over the years that they do just fine alone. I currently have a lone male in a 90g. He is super active, just as personable as any cichlid commonly known to be sociable.

Got him at 1in in Dec of 2012. Currently over 6in, maybe 7. 90g tank, Filstar canister and AC110 filters. Premium diet and 75% water change every 4-5 days.

I prefer the canister/ hob combo for cichlid tanks. Can provides excellent bio, the hob mechanical. What exactly are the filters you have now? Brand and size please. Substrate is your choice, JD is not a big digger, but does like a cave structure to get into. I have gravel for bottom (thin layer) and some stacked rocks for his cave
