@Trevor.. the sponges that come with the Filstar last years, even the fine top pad can be rinsed many times before it falls apart
@Chubbz.. Yes the shades of the kit can be a pain to distinguish, everyone sees color slightly different. At this point of your cycle you shouldnt need to be in the 4 range. 2ish will still be enough to provide feed for bacteria. Do you have any sign of nitrite or nitrate?

None yet. I tested for nitrite on Day 4 (as a control) and Day 12 when the ammonia level first dropped. 0ppm on both occasions. I haven't tested yet for nitrates. Here's a breakdown of what I've done so far.

Ok, I thought you were into it longer. Couple weeks is still early to see any nitrite. Kinda overlapped into Trevor's thread here, but since you two guys are in the same undertaking, similar timeframe, we'll carry on. Its a 6 week, usually longer process. Twiddle thumbs, do whatever, all good so far.To refresh, what kind of filter(s) are you trying to seed?

Someone along the way told me that Bio-Wheels were a good thing to have, so I bought this filter from Petsmart.

Oh ok so I don't even need to worry about mechanical filtration then. I did want to ask you though because it sounds like the Filstar doesn't come with a lot of bio media and I have I think like 750G of ceramic rings and a lot of the seachem matrix. But I have heard that little pot scrubbers work the same as bio media do you know wether that is true or not? I am curious because if I can add some of those also to give the BB more space it seems that would be better in the end right? If not I will just buy more bio media. It just seems weird paying so much for little plastic balls and at the end of the day I enjoy the DIY projects.

Quality ceramics are the most efficient bio media. I have some in all 4 baskets of my xpxl's. You get perforated plastic dividers for each basket. The sponges on the bottom basket only take about half the available space. Divider on top of sponges, fill the rest with bio. Middle two baskets full of bio. Top basket 3/4 bio, divider, then top pad.

Well I have 750G of ceramic rings. And a ton of the seachem matrix that I was told to use originally. I don't know if I have enough to fill it up entirely though. I assume making sure it is completely filled probably helps? My LFS is just really expensive that is all so I don't want to buy from them it is like 30 bucks for 20 bio balls and they don't even have ceramic rings. I didn't wanna wait to set it up that is why I was considering doing the pot scrubbers. I still have a gallon of seachem matrix

Hey I got a question, I lo post a picture later but I am doing a little water change right now so I can reconnect my filter and I noticed what looks like little tiny white hairs all over inside my aquarium. It's not like crazy or I would have known about it but taking the water out it just makes it more noticeable as a lot are on the inner glass wall of my aquarium. I am wondering if it is related to the food I was told to add to it with ammonia during cycling on the first guide I followed. After getting help here I vacuumed it all out... Or atleast I thought I did but I am wondering if that is why. Any idea what this may be? I thought it was just a couple hairs at first but now I realize it has to be something else.

Are these hairs moving, like worms? Could be Planaria worms, indeed caused by the food. Get rid of it at any rate. If they are alive, and you cant seem to shake them, a hefty salt dose and temp raise will knock them out.

I personally haven't seen any moving no but it is hard with the filter running and pushing the water so hard you know? With that said they look like they could be worms though yes. It shocks me if so though I mean I did throw a little bit of fish food in there at the beginning of the cycle but I also thought I vacuumed it alll out. Also at the beginning I was doing a fish cycle and had fed some bloodworms until I realized fishless was better and I took them out. The thing about that is shortly after that I completely ripped the tank apart and rinsed everything including the substrate. So it would have had to be from the pellets afterwards I suppose. But I thought I got rid of them. I did a big water change yesterday after I noticed them. It looks a lot better but I assume they are still there. I don't know how they would have that much food as I havnt had any fish food in their since like 3 weeks ago atleast. So i should try through water changes first?
