Kaerth created the topic: New tank large enough for oscar/s

Hello there, im getting a 500 litre tank (132 us gallons) and i would love to have oscar/s, they are the reason i got into the aquarium hobby aswell as the memories from the aquarium we had when i was a small child.
The tank is 200x50x50 cm (78.74015748x19.68503937x19.68503937 i believe it's a bit over 6 feet long but not sure)
It's still a few months until i get the tank but would love to have some time getting ready before it is here.
One thing that will come with the tank is a Paradalis catfish i know the tank is to small for one but it's pretty much impossible to sell one here only choice i would have is to give him to a store but they would sell him to live in a tank half this size if not even smaller so hes better of with me.

Then i would also like to know if a ancistrus works with oscar if my tank can handle oscar/s. In my current 2 tanks that i will have to sell to have space for the new one i have 2 a male and a female, the female i could get rid of but the male i love, hes a monster. I believe him not to be the common ancistrus. The common one i know of grows to about 15cm (6 inch) but my male is roughly 19cm (7.5inch) plus they refuse to spawn and they have been together for about a year now.

Filtration will not be an issue, tank is coming with an Fluval FX5 and i'm in the middle of building a diy canister filter was building one for my current 180 litre tank but i just need to buy a different pump and start putting it together.

Hello and welcome to OFL. A good sized tank, but as you already seem to be aware, not really so big for large fish. It could hold 2 Oscars, but nothing else. Keeping the cat and big pleco will limit you to 1 Oscar, and water changes of 75% volume every 4-5 days. FX5 a great filter, but instead of another canister, I recommend a pair of Aquaclear 110 hob's. Will give the FX much needed mechanical support.

I doubt hob's works on my tank without massive and possible destruction of tank and hob's aren't sold here maybe in some speciality stores but not around me. i also doubt it would be worth the cost for the effect , shipping here gets quite expensive. But the filter i'm making should have the filtration of an FX5 size in both mechanical and biological so that probably won't be an issue at all.

The reason for 2 oscar or 1 with the cat? bioload? or is it since it's cichlids as you never know how they are going to be until it's to late?

Getting Oscars to live together long term is difficult enough. Should it happen, your tank is whats considered a minimum size for a pair. Its unlikely a pair will accept tankmates anyways, even in a bigger tank. Bioload and terrirory is an issue in any cichlid aquarium. Substitute 1 Oscar for either a pleco or catfish, and you still have 2 large fish in a volume and footprint thats right around full.
