Im gonna be setting up a new tank with an oscar in it. Its been a few years since my last one, which was a 46g bow front that i had an albino in. But my question is can i use blue marine sand in this tank? I dont know anything bout this sand its been in a 5g pail for a few years. Something my gf had put away. Also, i believe its not good to mix s american n african cichlids together, true or false? What other fish are cool w oscars in a 45g tank. Ofcourse the oscar will b young when i get one. Thank you for any advice.

It's just sand, it's not going to be just for saltwater so you're perfectly okay. The best advice I can give you is to give it a really good clean to make sure there's nothing in there that will take the water.

Yes, you are right you shouldn't really mix Africans and South American fish. They require a completely different pH level for a start.

The biggest worry I have is the fact that you said 45 gallons for the Oscar. This isn't big enough for a fully grown adult so unless you intend on upgrading in about four or five months then your tank isn't big enough.

I hope that helps

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)
