OFL created the topic: Nightmare with new 300 gallon tank

Well, what can I say? This new project with my new 300 gallon tank has turned pear shaped. Follow the link below, watch the video and see my dilemma. I am getting advice but it does seem that most people would not trust the company to correct the problem satisfactorily because they obviously weren't capable of carrying out such a large product in the first place

I watched your video, sorry to hear about the problems your having. I wouldn't trust the company to fix the problems. With a tank that large, even a slight bow is going to lead to much bigger problems as time goes on.

I wish you the best of luck.

Basically, the company that made the tank made a very poor job of it. The glass condensation covers don't fit properly and won't close completely. Because of this, the lid is now starting to perish. It is warping and the brackets are starting to rust. You don't expect this to start happening on a tank that has only been set up to four weeks. Probably the biggest problem we have is how the Cabinet has been manufactured. It's difficult to say what will happen to the tank if it is left. I don't think I can take that chance. In the meantime, I need to find out what my rights are. What worries me, is if they do try to fix the problem, will they give me something as equally poorly made?

We all know how important a level tank is. If the stand is that warped after just a month, I can just imagne how bad it will get if left alone.

Looking at the viedo, it was a very poor way of making the stand and lid. Untill you figure out what is going to happen, I would at least get some wood blocks or shims placed under the edges of the stand to that they are supported. Atleast with them supported, you may stop any further damage till you figure out whats going to happen. Idon't know why they would leave the edges unsupported like they did.

The construction of the hood was also all wrong, looking at the hinges. TI can't believe how twisted the screds are, and the hinges should have been counter sunk into the wood (ie. just like a house doors hinges are) this way it will close completely, and the pressure of the lid is on the wood, and not the hinge itself.

Have you noticed any bowing in the tank itself besides the top center brace?

The whole construction is a shambles. Haven't noticed any bowing of the actual tank, yet.

It's taken quite a while to get this tank setup and now it looks as though I've got to start all over again because the Cabinet and lid will have to be replaced. I need to seek advice to find out exactly where I stand legally.

O dear o dear o dear. Why can anyone make or do anything right these days

The lid is poor manufacture and the glass is bad cutting. The cabinet is poor design.

I would contact the manufacturer and give them a chance to replace with a better design. If you paid with a credit card (always a good idea if anything cost over £100 in uk) then the card company is equally responseable so if you get no joy with the company take it up with the card company

I personally would push for a refund for the cabinet and maybe some more for inconvenience. I would then find a good carpenter. Not the sort that fit doors in houses etc but one that makes bespoke furniture

In the meantime i would be worried about the cabinet failing. If that happens the tank make break etc. I would empty the tank if you dont need it.

If you do need it you need a temporary solution. I would get some bricks and make some piles with them. Put 2 next to each other, then 2 more on top rotated 90 degree, then next layer rotated, keep adding until you get to the height you need. The get some good quality (no warps) 3/4 inch plyboard and place on top. Next get some 1/2 inch insulating polystyrene (from DIY stores) and place that on top. Place tank on top. My 6ft x 2.5ft x 2ft deep tank is like this but with chipboard added to cover things up and make it look nice. To give you an idea of how many piles of brick you will need i have 6 piles. Brick are cheap, the ply isnt, it cost me £47 cut to size for mine

I really feel for you. You must be gutted. Good luck

I can't get no sleep

Just watched your vid and nearly brought a tear to my eye:( :( A friend of mine had a 1000l+ tank made for him and when it arrived he threw the cabinet away and built his own as he said he wouldnt trust it to hold 100l never mind 1000l!!
I also cant understand why they would use hinges and screws which would be prone to rusting:angry: Did you tell them that the idea of an "aquarium" is to hold water? Anyway enough of my moaning, Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
