I have to agree with delboybully carbon is really not needed and far too expensive. There is also the theory that it causes HITH disease.

I clean my filter once a month just rinse the media in tank water DON'T rinse it under the tap or you'll loose all the beneficial bacteria.

Keep a real close watch on your water readings watch for any spikes.

Ammonia should be 0 ppm
Nitrite should be 0 ppm
Nitrate 10-40 ppm

Good luck with all of it and keep us posted.

Oh and welcome to the wonderful world of Oscar Fish ;)

so heres my 5cents,switch the lighting of completly untill yr oscar is confident in his new tank, oscars dont really need light and therefor sometimes look for hiding place when light is switched on.

Add some Stress Zyme & once yr water quality is good introduce the light gradually.

DONT BUY ON IMPULSE DO SUM HOMEWORK FIRST

Well today was the first I saw the fish swimming around. I put some food in and it was eating fine.

Our puppy was drawn to the new movement in the tank. I was worried that it might send the fish back into hiding, but the Oscar seemed just as curious about the dog. Had a couple of nose to nose moments, I wish I had a camera. Now every time the dog puts her nose up to the glass the fish will come out and swim right up to her.

I'm really glad the fish is not dead. Had a couple of frantic days, but hopefully he/she will pull through.

Oh, that is good news :)

And funny about the dog! One of the cool things about Oscars is anyway how they react to the surroundings outside the tank, to me at least. Our dog had her pillow right beside the tank for a while, and the Oscar would keep trying to scare her away.

Good luck, and I'm sure once Your Oscar got used to the tank and you're through with the full cycling, you'll enjoy it even more.

If I were a guy, I\'d have probably needed only 30% of the amount of words to say this

Oscars are sometimes called the river dog, they are like a puppy when young, all bouncy and very hungry and stuff their mouths. When they get old they move slow and sometimes seem like they cant be bothered just like an old dog

Glad your fish is improving :)

I can't get no sleep
