ChristopherDayton created the topic: Just some Newbie questions...

Hey everyone! well I have two small oscars who are temporarily housed in a 33gal tank while I figure out the best way to set up their permanent home.. I also wasn't sure if they would be a bit scared in an 80gal. Anyways, as stated I have an 80gal tank for them as well as a Fluval FX5 external filter. how do you suggest I set them up? and should there be more than 2? also from what I have read this shouldnt be the case but they act like a 1.1 pair. swimming together and rubbing eachother.. comment on this as well if you like..

No room for any more Oscars. You got good filtration with that big filter. Get your new tank filled, set the filtration up and let it stand for a couple of days to give the water a chance to warm up. I would then go and get some small fish to cycle the tank. You can follow the instructions on the "how to cycle a tank " page. I recently used a product called stresszyme and even though there's a little of controversy about these type off products, I have to say it did work for me. I would probably only is it on small fish such as tetras and guppies and see how they get on. Just keep check on the ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. When you start seeing a reading of nitrate, you know that bacteria are present.

How big are your Oscars at the moment?

I dont think theyed be scared give them lots of stuff to explore like a big cave and lots of plants and tiny gravel or sand is easiest and then they can dig in it but with the plants if there fake they might try to move them so if you dont want that then put something heavy over it i personally think theyll have fun in a big tank thats like us in a big house wed have a field day with tons of places to explore the more room the better is what im learning

You you will not whether you've got a pair for a long long time. Even then, nothing may happen, especially if you've got two males, or two females.
