This was my male female pair. Notice the blotchy appearance of the spangling on the smaller female's gill plate...

For old time sake the male in full breeding colors:

Males get more blue coloration in the body, longer dorsal fins, bigger altogether.

Females get a lot of coloration in the cheek area, not so much in the body.

Here is a video that shows the classic difference between the two:

@JasonR: how did those 2 get along? My female is about the size of the one in ur pic, if i end up getting a bigger male will they get along or will he kill her?

That's usually a very reliable indicator; however, some males do get coloration in the cheek area. Look @ Jason's male; notice the cheek area. I have a baby JD right now that I know is a male, & it has color in the cheeks also. Blue coloration going all the way through the body (& size & longer dorsal fins)are the most reliable sexing tools.

Right on. Jason's seem to have brighter colors than mine does, but I'm sure once he gets out of the confines of the tank he's in he'll brighten right up. I live in Grand Rapids, however, like I said, I'm on the road most of the time. As it stands it looks like I'm away at least until the beginning of April. When I get home though, it would be no problem to come down and meet you. A couple hours of driving is nothing compared to my every day. We can call it official if you want to. All I gotta do is figure out when exactly I'll be home(I can find out in the morning) and the best way to remove and transport him without doing any damage.

Price check! Clean up, Aisle Six! Rotted body landsliiiiiiiide. And don't forget our special sale on every bone broken chickennnnn! Hurry! Enjoy our tasty hammer smashed face! Uh, Aisle Three.

Those two along with many pairs had their spats some of which were brutal. He beat her up pretty bad a couple times. Had to get the divider out a lot so make sure you have one ready. Also try and get her plenty of hiding places where the male cant get at her. If the female isnt ready to breed but the male is things can get nasty.

Awesome! My number is 574-835-2305, i work 2nd shift(3p-11p) so just shoot me a text anytime when ya find out and we'll work somethin out. For a trip that long i would probably use a bucket, i've never moved a fish that far though so i'm not real sure. I'll bring a few jugs of water to pour in about halfway home. I would think that'd do the trick? How much u want for it?

Dont worry the last pic of my male was in the midst of breeding dance. They color up very nice to impress the female. ;)
