eboost created the topic: Want to buy a 55-75 gal tank

First off I would like to to say hello to everyone, I'm new to the site and looking to purchase a larger tank for my Oscars, a 55-75 would be ideal for my budget. I don't need a stand, tank only. I'm in the north west suburbs of Chicago and would like to be able to pick up and not have to ship.

Hi, welcome to OFL

i went through your predicament - and would suggest to pickup the biggest tank you can afford / house. a 55 would run you no more than $55 (petco have sales for $1 a gal --new--) a used 75 would run you about $50 also.

check Craigslist or monsterfishkeepers market site. there's a huge listing of great tanks there and local might i add.

Thanks, I have been on Petco and Petsmart and have never seen a sale that good. I hope I find it soon tho! They have a small case of ICK and im treating, but I want to move them into a bigger tank once they are cured and the new tank is cycled.

How many fish are you looking to put into the tank?

And try kijiji, make sure you ask to see the tank Filled up, so you can make sure it actually holds water, I found a nice tank on kijiji with a stand for a steal! im going to look at it when they get back from holidays, hopefully it will be in my home by the 28th at the latest of this month :) Good luck, also you can try eBay. Tanks are usually under pets, or pet accessories. You can find tanks on their own, if your picking something up just make sure you strap it down lightly to make sure it doesnt move, but doesnt create pressure points and bring lots and lots of towels or blankets, something to absorb everything on your bumpy ride home. Sorry if im pointing out the obvious to you, id just like to make sure you know lol.

a larger tank for how many oscars? A 55 or a 60 gallon (60 is better) is ideal for one oscar, on its own, and really can't house more than one for any substantial amount of time.

I second everyone else, look to buy second hand. Great deals are sometimes out there.

Welcome again :)

I have two small ( less than three inches ) in a 30gal tank, I know its WAY to small for them, thats why im looking for a bigger tank. I don't have any water specs on me as Im at work.

For those two to live together, they'll need about 110 gallons, six feet long. Any less and maintenance is impossible, and the fish get aggressive towards each other and may kill one another.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

They'll grow at an inch a month for you (in general), so in the 55-60 gallon tank, you have about three months or so before the water quality will get tricky to maintain. By then, they may also begin to be quite aggressive to each other.

But they're fantastic fish, like dogs in many ways :) It's worth the effort to keep them well (well, I think so :) ). They get to be ten or more years old too!

Everyone is just here to help haha, Nina has given me so much advice, along with everyone else, I currently have mine in a 10G, I know, YIKES! But I am doing my best to get a new tank asap, thanks to everyone here my fish are doing a lot better, I had ich, and its getting a lot better, i think it was because the small tank size, and if you dont have aggression problems now, there likely to develope, my 2 oscars were doing fine together swimming around, and the Lutino wouldnt leave the Tigers side, well, the Tiger wanted more space, and learned he was the alpha so I had to divide them :( Till my new tank arrives. And im ganna try again in the bigger tank, and if they dont work out, ill have to return one :( Its sad, but you gotta do whats best for the fish right?

x2

Also , you may want to have a divider on hand. cause if both of them turn out to be male it will be like a MMA fight in that tank...
