Hmm. Caught the umbee flashing against driftwood once or twice this afternoon. Something to be concerned about? Wondering if I should do a pre-emptive treatment for parasites just in case...

Edit: oh, he also ate krill today. Of course he chose the one piece I hadn't broken up as small as the rest.

Edit edit: he hasn't done it since... I'll keep an eye on him. In other words, I'll just keep spending 90% of my time gawking at him while he swims about all hyperactive and tiny.

You'd be gawking anyway :P I remember all the updates I got when you got Henry, lol. "Guess what? Henry's hungry!" "You'll never guess- Henry's hungry!" :P

Anyway, fish are cool to watch swimming around. R doesn't quite get it and pays me out. But you guys both watch the tank as much as I do when you visit, lol, so I am vindicated! Mwahahahaha!

How long do you think it'll be before you're handfeeding? :P

P.S. LOVE the name you've chosen. :D Remember, Midna is possibly reserved! P

Keeper of the Food Pellets of Malekith the Never Accursed, Lover of Bubbles and Airstones, and Beloved of the Rogue Violetta.

Throw yourself in- use the wrong words, try different foods, kiss random fish. It's an adventure!

Oh yeah. By popular vote the little one's going to be named Ganon.

And Henry's still hungry.

"Wondering if I should do a pre-emptive treatment for parasites just in case..."

I would advise never treat preemptively unless you know exactly what you're treating for. Indiscriminate use of meds can lead to disaster.

Fish scratch itches just like we do.....although it can be, not necessarily a sign of illness.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

Thanks for the advice Jack, I was sort of thinking 'aloud' with that post, if that makes sense. Won't be doing anything unless he shows concrete signs of illness.

Edit: yay, he's started eating pellets! Did a water test tonight and it looks like the bio media switch from Henry and co + leaving any uneaten food in the tank has done what I'd hoped regarding the cycle. Getting 0ppm ammonia, 0 nitrite and a tiny hint of orange with nitrate. Bit hard to tell with nitrate though, so going to test daily until it's a definitive reading.

Good job on getting everything together after the indecent with the original tank Sounds like a really stressful day. If I ever convert my entire house, into a fish room, I would love to have one. I may have missed it, but did you get him online, or did you get him from a local source?

Thanks robham. I got him from a fish store about 2 hours away, and was referred there by a couple of other LFS in the Melbourne area that I'd called up asking about Umbees. The store I got mine from specialises in American Cichlids and not much else.

He won't stay still! But managed to snap this one that shows the speckling he's starting to get in his fins.

Has Jack given you his thoughts on male or female?

Nope, not yet. What do you think? I can tell the difference between fully grown Umbees, but I have absolutely no idea for one this small.
