I'd look for one a bit smaller than an oscar as the 55 is gonna be a little cramped once he gets full sized. I've been looking at blue johanni cichlids. Super colorful and much more suited for a 55. Max out around 5 inches from what I've read. The males are a stunning blue color and the females are bright yellow. They rival saltwater fish in how vivid the coloring is. I'll put up a pic in a sec

There are a range of medium sized aggressive cichlids that could do ok in a 55. The Cuban Cichlid (Nandopsis-Tetracanthus), comes to mind or a Jack dempsey.

Lots of other options too. But, yeah, the 55 will become cramped in a 55 ultimately.

Jack Dempsey....if you can sex them when they're small & find a good specimen, a male JD can be one of the most colorful CA cichlids:

Salvini cichlids are a good choice...but colorful specimens can be hard to come by:

If I could find a LFS that has them, I would have the "mini-Dovii", a Grammodes already:

P. Freidricshtahlii doesn't get much more than 10", & are a great fish:

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.
