You don't want to know my opinion on hybrid cichlids.. ...but I left a few more choices.

THOSE WHO REFUSE KNOWLEDGE ARE DOOMED TO FAIL.

WATER CHANGES ARE THE LIFEBLOOD OF THIS HOBBY. IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE SO OR SIMPLY DON'T FEEL LIKE DOING THEM, RE-HOME YOUR FISH, SELL YOUR AQUARIUM & FIND ANOTHER HOBBY, AS YOU WILL FAIL UTTERLY, COMPLETELY, & MISERABLY.

None of the fish listed so far are from South America, except festae and severum (I wouldn't classify severum as being aggressive).

There are pike cichlids from the Crenicichla saxatilis group that would do fine in a 55 g footprint. Then you have the female festae, already mentioned, females from Cichlasoma ornatum or Cichlasoma atromaculatum, Caquetaia myersi, C. spectabile, or C. kraussi, Gold Saum, True green terror.

Options jump up if you could get a 75 g, which has an 18" width.

Don't think he specifically asked for SA cichlids, just "oscar sized" (which is not recommended) and "aggressive" that would fit in a 55.

ETA: I have a few wild severums that are a lot of fun and aggressive enough in their own way. Wouldn't get more than two in a 55. Great fish though.

Gottcha. That only comes up at the very top of my screen in small print.

Although to be sure he did also ask about Texas cichlids as a possibility.

Members place posts in inappropriate threads all the time. OP asked for cichlids that would do well in a 55GL. All options given are acceptable for that size aquarium.
