Currently have a 240 gallon stocked with a 10" sun cat, 7" Oscar, and a 4 to 5" Jack Dempsey. All very common. I'm only familiar with the usual lfs cichlids because that is all I have seen.

I'm looking to add a cichlid not seen in lfs. Something that will not be overly aggressive towards the others. So I've turned towards the pros for your recommendations

I know someone who has a few large tanks and has tried mixing different cichlids. He's still trying different combinations looking for something that'll work. The problem with putting different cichlids together is that you just can never know if they'll get along. By nature cichlids are very territorial, but in some cases they get along fairly well. It's really hit and miss. I'd consider something else ... you probably have enough cichlids. Also, you don't want to overstock your tank. If we say ... 55 gallons for an oscar, 40 gallons for a JD x 4, you're close to being maxed out.

If you're looking for something rare and unique then the fish store Maybe able to put feelers out for you. Alternatively, aquatic ads can often throw up surprises. The biggest problem is if you do get something that is very rare, then not many people could advise you on how it will get on with your other fish. If you find it doesn't get on them you're basically stranded then. Not trying to put you off, just pointing out any problems that may occur.

You can try the Rotkeil severum. Very beautiful fish and a good community fish and relatively rare (as compared to other kinds of severum).

Another that is a good community fish is a chocolate cichlid. They are quite large, oscar size, but peaceful fish by reputation. Occasionally they will come to local fish stores, but not so common that everyone has one (I don;t )

Both are SA cichlids. Just a couple of ideas. How long is your 240? Nice volume to do stuff with. Others will have even more rarities to suggest. The place where most shop for rare, specialty items in the US (if that is where you are) is Jeff Rapps, a dealer on the east coast who ships to the continental US. You might consider searching in the archives of this site for his name and you will see lots of examples of his fish. My own Bumblebee Oscar came from him, although I myself received him from another member of this site rather than purchasing it from him.

It's only one Oscar and one Jack. I meant the jack was between 4 to 5 inches.

The tank is 8'X2'X2'. I've been browsing Jeff Rapps today. Great site and probably my best bet.

You are definitely in good shape to add another fish or two, depending on what you get. But to be sure, there is always a risk especially mixing SA and CA cichlids. You should focus on your oscar as your "center piece" fish and then find fish to compliment him.

That is an awesome size of tank! I am jealous. :woohoo:

Then you are in great shape, territory wise for a few different things. Make some choices and see what the good people of OFL think before you buy them. There is also the Wetspot in Portland that ships and has a good variety of species.

Yea. My O was my first fish so i'm a little attached to him. My O harasses my Jack sometimes. The jack seems to be really skittish so far. Neither of them pay attention to the suncat.
