I have a single jack dempsey 3 inches long in a 55gal grow out tank . Since im putting him in a much larger aquarium when he gets bigger with other large cichlids can i also add 2-4 similar sized cichlids like oscars or something else to the 55 until they all grow a little larger? Id like the fish to get along before being added to the big tank as adults. What cichlids would go well and what would be the ideal amount and type of fish to reduce aggression. I would also like to know how many fish i could add. The tank is minimally decorated with rocks and logs and has a oversized 500gph canister and hob filter that can handle extra fish and overstocking. Thanks for the help

My advice would be to wait until you have got the big tank all set up and running. Then get the fish you need as babies and let them grow in the environment they will stay in. I know that you probably want them ASAP, but it's best to be patient and start off in this hobby as you mean to go on.

Jack Dempsey are semi-aggressive so will be okay with other semi-aggressive cichlids such as Oscars, Fire Mouth cichlids, blue acara, just to name a few. But if you're talking about more than one Oscar then I hope that you are planning for a change in excess of 100 gallons, especially if you want tank mates as well.

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

I was planning around a 200gal as a large cichlid display tank after the jd gets to around 6-8 in. I wanted to add an oscar, the jd, and either a jag, some cons, or sonething around the same size. I couldnt add any of these fish to the jd's 55 gal so they get used to each other and grow out? The jd is only 3in and is the only fish in the overfiltrated tank. He also only seems territorial of half the tank so wouldnt another fish like an oscar just defend the other side?

JD grow slowly. Oscars very quickly. No good together in 55. 200 g can support multiple fish, but still never a guarantee of a peaceful setting. Every fish has its own personality and temperament. I have mild JDs, I have one that is a complete goon, serial killer. Forget about a Jag, that a whole other level of size and ferocity. Even a medium sized Jag of average demeanor can and likely will kill every other fish you mention. The Firemouth, Convicts, as well as Nicaraguans are good JD tankmates as a rule. Milder South Americans like the Acara probably not a good choice. They cant defend against Central Americans. Oscars can usually manage due to their rapid growth and size advantage, but a nasty JD or couple of mean Convicts can harass and bully a much larger Oscar literally to death. Mixing cichlids is always a coin toss.

Ill have to look into Nicaraguans and ive never been a fan of firemouths skittish nature so ill probably go with something else. Thanks for the advice. And also since my Jd is only 3in and pretty calm and and shy so can i add any other fish to the tank so hes not all alone? I had a pleco and a fully grown golden wonder killi in the tank with him and he seemed to not mind them unless the killi went in his side of the tank for too long and then he would just chase him away so u think hed be fine with something more its size that can stand its own.
