magicmagann created the topic: plants vs algae

With the battle of plants vs. brown algae going on, the plants seamed to stop growing at all so I introduced seachem flourish to help. This didn’t work causing an explosion of brown algae and having no effect on the plants. What is the factor I’m missing? Is there a nutrient deficiency that would cause algae to grown but not plants when micro nutrients where added.

Please help!

Brown algae is diatoms. Common in newly set up aquariums & usually in tanks with lower lighting levels. Diatoms eventually go away on thier own, usually within the first 6 months but can last as long as 18 months. Diatoms are more common in tanks with low intensisty lighting. Adding ferts or co2 will not help get rid of them any faster, you just have to be patient. Clean your plants off every few days so that they do not become choked & can still perform photosynthisis. You can try increasing lighting intensity (not duration) to see if that helps but usually once diatoms have started all you can do is wait them out.

I have 2x24w t5 tubes on a 36"12"15" tank shouldn’t that be adequate lighting? The plaque really hasn’t stopped. The tank has been set up for over a year really confused and annoyed.

perience that the addition of trace elements and fertilizers without co2 just feeds algae. with co2 your plants will outcompete algae. with no co2 i would stop fertilizing.

I have no idea why the water bill is so high

co2 injection seams really expensive. will flourish excel do the job I also seen seachem clarity I was thinking of getting to clear up the brown green water which seems to be getting worse as the brown algae continues to infest every object in the tank. I have stopped using flourish if that helps. Thanks for everyone’s input so far
