aDDanDrew created the topic: Backyard decoration

My water has been green all last week and this week and couldn't find out why until last night. The tree stump I picked up from my backyard started to grow white stuff all over so I took it out. How can I prevent this from happening? I really like how the stump looks like and it's a very nice place for my O's to sleep. Still in search of the RIGHT driftwood size...

White fuzz on the wood is normal. It will eventually quit...
But what kind of wood is it???

I would boil it or if to big pour boiling hot water on it. Then scrub it down good. White stuff sounds like a fungus. How did you clean it before you placed it in the tank.

If this caused algae maybe the stump was leaking alot of nutrients that caused the blooms.
I would really try to boil it for a while if at all possible so as to leach all the bad stuff out.

Not sure what type of wood. I randomly picked it up from my backyard, thought it looked nice for my tank. All I did was rinse it and brushed some of the wood that was coming off, no sanding or boiling.

Was it dead?

And if it was a soft wood, (Pine, Cedar, Elm) it will rot...

You really shouldn't just randomly put wood in the tank....

Might be a pine tree, lots of them around my house. I'm actually not gonna bother with that stump. Lesson learned! Whats the difference between the stump I picked up and the driftwood?

driftwood tends to have been well soaked and is dead wood. Plus only certain woods can be used like Nicki pointed out. I get mine from florest traders as they dont mind bartering and you can get a much cheaper price. Alot of people pick it up of the beach or river line but make sure you boil it well before adding to your tank and most driftwood will dye your water as though it is tea stained.

I'm living my life, but not necessarily in the right order :)
