I have a question. Since you seem to have quite a knowledge about plants; how much do plants actually help to reduce Nitrates? I'm thinking of making some kind of set-up with plants to control those darn Nitrates :pinch:

nice I love that bamboo but its always expensive around by me; I'm guessing you cant put normal bamboo in? I've asked this before.

Here is latest vid of my tank with my rainbows; mine have always been swimming around very active and very friendly. They have had eggs a few times but I'm afraid Raf eat them and plec.

I don't have any scientific knowledge and numbers to go by but plants are the worlds filters, be it on land or under water. It has been proven that having plants in you tank does indeed reduce the nitrate lvls produced there. Plants break down and use the components that make up nitrates and use it in there development. Plants need Nitrogen to go through photosynthesis so in turn they break the binds holding NO2 and NO3 together thus helping to reduce these toxins that are lethal to your fish in high doses.
I am sure I missed a lot of the real science behind it all and others may have addition facts to add. In the end plants reduce nitates in your tank and even doing this a wee bit is beneficial in the long run. :)

this is why I use house plants in my filters for same reasons, and alot of others on here. :)

hey Jnet, nice rainbows. So you have no issues with time getting bullied by your large O's???? I just have mine in a 20g with 4 sepera tetras.
To bad about the eggs :( Mine have tried but they can't get it right and they never get fertilized. Maybe one day they will do it right. :)

As for "normal bamboo" what do you mean by that? As far as I know what I have is normal bamboo. If you could give me more info on what type you are thinking of I might be able to get back to you on whether it is safe and will survive in tanks. I got my 3 sticks for $9.99 Canadian with each piece being about a 12"+ long

What kind of house plants do you use in your filters JNET????

the bamboo you have is sold as lucky bamboo by me and I'm guessing its not the same as bamboo in your garden the one in my garden looks completely diffenret. ;)

The house plant I use I'm not sure what its called; did find name out at one time as I sell the cuttings but cant remember but its purple.
