Sosban Fach created the topic: Lighting

I have a 2'x2'x5' tank and Im looking to keep one oscar in it. Im planning on planting before the fish introduced as a juvi 2", hopefully it would be to small to do anything about the plants. When it gets bigger im hopeing it will be used to leaving them alone. I have high notrates in the tap water so its worth a try.

Im still figuring out what Plants im going to get, but in tandem I need to figure out what lights I need to get. I'm looking at high growth, med lighting, nitrate reduction and preferably without the use of fertalizers or c02 diffusers.

Plants im looking at Hygrophila corymbosa, Hygrophila difformis, Cabomba caroliniana, Ludwigia & Anacharis.

Ive read these plants are high growth and need med to bright light, but how much is this in watts? What lights do you guys use and for what plants? Do I need fertilzers and c02 diffusers?

Any other recomendations of plants I should consider, will also be greatly apreciated.

I'm afraid I really can't give you much advice on aquarium plants as it's not really my area. However, keeping aquarium plants healthy is a hobby in its own, often people go to a lot of trouble installing equipment to keep their plants healthy and growing. What I can say for sure is that you may find that your Oscar takes great enjoyment in ripping plants the pieces, I've never had any success in keeping them together. Maybe you should get a few plants like the Amazon sword and put them in your tank and see how your Oscar gets on with them. The Amazon sword is a fairly hardy plant which isn't difficult to keep alive, at least it will save you a lot of money if you find out your Oscar likes uprooting plants stop

I may not always be right, but I am always the BOSS :-)

I have put in a variety of species including amazon sword and this long tall grass thing, forgotten what it's called and a number of moss balls. Im looking for ease of care with the plants and general toughness. Introducing the fish sometime next week maybe the week after, waiting on the tank to finish cycling it's almost there. The fish is on order and will be in the shop wednesday, the will keep it for me for a further three weeks after that so plenty of time to finish the cycle. Considering I'm in the final phases now.

getting really excited can't wait!

ha ha posted this weeeeks ago,

The oscar isnt touching the plants; the severum which is a bit older is desimating them. I hgadn't planned on getting a severum and hadnt read up enough on them. I knew they got big but I didnt realise they have a tendancy to eat plants.

aH WELL.
