Tank shot

Plants from left to right, first left side of tank. Moss balls at the bottom, one of these has been eaten the secound on its way. Towards the front one of the first 10 which I've forgotten what it was called, towards the back a recent addition of java fern tied to bog wood, small plant but no damege. And of course the sev, it was difficult to take a photo without the sev in, kept swimming in the way. The Oscar is a bit more timid, because oddly enough the sev is tank boss.

Centre tank, behind blue pipe. The other in unidentified plant from the first 10, one of two leaves poking out. I would say the plant is not in good condition and never has been. I picked it out because it was a cheap variety, the fish have left it alone completely.

Right side of tank, far left java fern, been there two months practically untouched. Next to it a new addition the anubias nana, completely untouched, next to that the other java fern from the first 10. These two java fern are just stuffed into the substrate and are doing great, new growth and plantlets growing off them. I stuck them in before I read that "java fern must be attached to something to give ample rooting" this would suggest otherwise. At the back left amazon sword, practically stripped par one old leaf and some new growth between the stems. Back right the other new addition java windelov fern, the frayed tips is the natural look of the plant. It is not damaged by the fish.

Close ups of plants on right side of tank, the little white marks are planaria on the glass. I'm fairly sure these came along wit one of the new plants. First off java fern, a bite out of the major leaf, but that's it. The lower smaller leaves are new growth since I had it two months ago.

The anubias nana, the smudges towards the left are on the tank glass not the plant. A small specimen but completely untouched and nice leaves.

The windelov, bit odd, but untouched

And the two fish

I love you severum.

Pretty plants too! I've never had much luck with anything other than moneywort or hornwort, but I think it's fair to say that my africans are a bit harder on plants than most Oscars.

How much light do you have on your tank? As far as I understand it, that's pretty much the crucial factor in getting plants to grow.

I love the tank. Is it hard to keep that thick layer of gravel clean ? And are those plants hard to keep down while cleaning the gravel ?

Thanks for the comments guys, It's a working progress. The sev is pretty cool, but the Oscar has his moments.

No its not to hard to travel vac even being floor mounted. I would recommend a longer tube though I put one on and its made the job alot easier.

Nice asst. of plants. Yup, they may take a poke @ the Java Fern, but it must taste real bad; my Jag & my Royal pleco leave it alone. I don't even think SD's will really mess w/ java fern after a taste!! I have a big one in my 180 that's several years old, & has runners that have taken hold on a big piece of bogwood. Grows S-L-O-W-L-Y, but once it gets going, it gets HUGE!! Try getting a big piece of bogwood & getting some industrial staples & tap them in w/ a small hammer to secure it to the wood; works really well.

Is that a real cast iron T?

Thanks!

I found the two java ferns on the right hand side of the tank have grown a couple of new leave since ive had them (8 weeks) and there just stuffed into the substrate. Its weird everywhere I've read it says they should have died but there doing great.

One of the new ones I bought is on bogwood and the other on live rock, its just hidden by the substrate.

Yes it's a real cast iron T for mains gas suppply. it's powder coated and designed to be stuck in the ground for atleast 20 years so there's no worry degradation of oxidisation of the iron to contaminate the water. I acquired it whilst at uni; moved it between three temporary homes, thought about building a computer in it, but I think I've found it's calling

There may be a minute amount metals leaching through, but since I use ro water I'm guessing it would bring it back up to natural levels. If my fish ever get ill it will come out straight away.

Please take pic of your fern I'd like to see how big they get.

Had my tank planted all nice with alot of fake plants.Until about five months ago i had no issues. Now they tear them to shreds.

They enjoy rearranging. I let them have at it and do as they please. As long as they are happy. Im happy
