scratches and Rami created the topic: What soil is best for planted tanks?

Hi everyone, I recently bought myself a 55 gallon, my final tank for my grow out community tank for my Discus and angel fish's.
I have been thinking of doing a planted 55, and was willing to try out soil for my plants. I have saw the extra bags of soil that my dad has used for his garden outside and its called "all purpose gardening soil". I'm just thinking about the chemicals that it has inside, and wanted to know if I should use this, or get another type of soil. I was thinking sand was well, but I already have a sand tank, and wanted a new look to my collection. Help?

Id have to defer to other members here as i dont have experience with this. Big Ken a member here has some great threads in the plants section you could check out. Otherwise you could pm him for individual assistance. Good luck!:)

Heres a thread specificly about planted tank substrates, it gives the pros and cons of each option

here is my personal build thread of my 55g dirt tank, it has step by step with pics of how I prepped my substrate

LOL yeah, maybe soil isn't for me, I saw the Cons towards it, not really pleasing with the amount of algae it may produce. I'll just stick with the sand, and I just saw my box of API laterite, which will do fine with my root tabs I have also bought. Thanks for the help, I hope my plants will do fine for me, and my fish will love the new home :D.

A dirt tank would be really cool, if you could keep from turning your filter impellers into mud. If only I could train my big O to NOT take mouthfuls of substrate and spit them out in front of the intakes.
