Phantom created the topic: Can fake plants melt?

Alright these may sound like a couple stupid questions but better safe than sorry. I recently added a few fake plants to my aquarium and am wondering if they melt if touching a water heater?
I would assume no since the water is being filtered and always moving and I can grab my heaters when they are on underwater and they merely feel very warm to the touch, not searing hot or anything.

Also, one of my decorations developed a crack. If its cracked will this leech toxins into my water? Or are plastic decorations totally non-toxic even on the inside?

Not realy stupid questions.

I would say if a plant made contact with a heater and was there for an extended period of time, it could cause the plastic plant to melt. I've had plentey of suction cups melt on the end where it goes through the hole to fix into the bracket for my heater.

If the ornament is an aquarium safe resin type it shouldn't cause any problems.
I used to have a large rock ornament in my Oscar tank, it literally started to break down in the water, had cracks and bits were falling off, I found that inside the broken peice it was made of fibreglass coated in some sort of sealant. I removed it from the tank because I didn't want it leaching into the water, better safe than sorry. It was designed for aquarium use but still looked dodgy to me.

The ornament that has the small crack is made of pure plastic; its probably safe but I think I'll pull it out and just replace it. As for my fake plants, I try not to put them right against the heater but my Oscar prefers to bull his way through the plants rather than around them and parts are now definately making contact with the heaters. I'm not too worried if some of the plastic on the plants deforms a bit, but will that cause anything bad to be released into the water if it happens?

I doubt it, but I would say if there was anything bad leached into the tank water, it wouldn't be of high enough concentration to cause harm to your fish.
And from the way people who keep Oscars perform (or should perform :S ) water changes the chances are minimal.
