tjwalley created the topic: Suggestions??

I got a gift card for Petco and REALLY want to add live plants to my aquarium. I like the natural look as well as their function. Problem is that i've tried live plants before and they never seemed to grow? They would get shredded and then just kindda stahl out and quit growing. I also had a pair of big dempseys, but now i have a couple very small juvie oscars so if i got big plants they would have trouble up rooting them (now anyway.). So i'm on the fence about spending the money for live plants again and maybe trying the fertilizer pellets this time around. OR just getting some fake plants that way the worst they can do is just pull them up and move them around? Taking suggestions on which route you would personally go. If u decide planted, any tips for planting, fertilizing, and schedules for lights would be greatly appreciated. I'm lookin at moss balls, amazon swords, java ferns and moss, vals, and a few other hardy, bushy plants. I'm cautious on spending all that money and having them all die again.

Thanks!

swords are quite hardy and easy aquatic plant to care for. they don't need a lot of light. these aren't expensive and will fill up your tank space

i like Anubis also, these are hardy and require low light ~ love the rich green leafs

all the plants you noted down are easy to care for .. and i have luck with having an O and JD in with these.

you'll need to prune them once they become brown ... thorn off ...

What time intervals do you use for turning your lights on and off?

Amazon sword and java fern will be your best bet with O's and they should do fine with stock lighting, the swords will need root tabs. Your best bet would be to get a bag of good planting substrate like ada aquasoil or seachem flourite and plant the swords in pots, that should help deter your O's from digging them up. The java fern will need to be tied or super glued to a piece of wood or rock

I run my lights 8 hours a day, but im also running CO2 and fert dosing. I would reccommend starting at 6 hours and slowly increasing till you start to see algae then back off

Right on, thanks! I think i'm gonna go ahead with the live plants, but leave enough on the giftcard to get fake just in case i'm terrible at growing them lol

If i can keep the first batch alive i'll go back for more. Thanks again!
