I'm looking to up the lighting output on my new tank. It came with some LED lights, but I don't think they're going to have enough umph to grow what I'd like to.

I'm looking to go heavily planted and want to know what suggestions people have to achieve high lighting output on a 125g that's ~24" tall.

I've got a good 2" bed of flourite capped with river gravel. I'm thinking a good T5HO setup but unsure if I could get away with a dual or if I'd need a quad lamp system.

Lunar lights aren't a huge concern for me, just a nice bonus.

p.s. This tank will house 2 black piranha until one grows out large enough to be sold. Then it will be a single species tank. Yes there's gonna be a divider since I don't want them killing each other.

Matt im running dual T5HO on my 90g (48"x18"x24") and i am in the medium-high range. I really like it cause its high enough light to grow most anything but the most picky plants but its not so much that i have to run massive co2 and weekly trimmings, i am still running a 5lb pressurized co2 system and light fert dosing

I'm thinking about doing a fermentation co2 system, yeast sugar water and a diffuser in my wet dry so I don't have to look at it lol.

Thanks though, I was thinking dual T5's but wanted expert opinion. I don't think the LED's I have right now will put out enough wpg to grow effectively.

a double + single one? that'll put you in the zone to go heavily planted yet not enough to encourage algae blooms.

LED are just starting to get popular with the smaller tank planted folks but it is still really expensive for anyone with a tank deeper than 16"-18", LED's have a hard time getting sufficient light to the bottom of deep tanks.

DIY co2 can be done on big tanks but the biggest hurdle is you need a steady and consistant flow of co2 to prevent BBA, Black Brush Algae is caused by to much nutrients and inconsistant co2. I did the DIY route but it became to expensive to do right on a big tank i was changing out the mix every week cause it would run out in 8-10 days, i had two bottles so i could minimize the flucation

Huh, interesting, I may look into a pressurized regulated system down the road.

And yes, for the lights I was thinking 2 36" dual T5HO with 6500k bulbs. Being 18" deep, do you think that will be enough light penetration?

These are what I've ordered, have 2 coming in the next few days

Got one of my lights, it's awesome, but it came with an actinic bulb which I think I'm going to have to replace, should I got with another 10000k which it already has, or a 6700k?

I run a 48" dual bulb t5ho over my 90g and i am in the medium-high light range so 2 36" fixtures should be good

With the bulb color is all personal
choice, if you like it more on the blue white side go with another 10k if you like more of the balanced white go with a 6700k. I am running two 6700k and its a bit to yellow for my taste, i am due to buy new bulbs here in a few months and will go with the 10k/6700k combo

Cool, I'll get some pics up when my 2nd light gets here, but I think i'm going to run the 6700k and 10k combo.

Now to find a Co2 system.....

So I've got my lighting sorted out, I've got my substrate sorted out, now I need Co2...

I've been doing some looking and I'm leaning more towards a pre-built regulator with a bubble counter etc.

This is one of the setups I've been eyeballing, and I'm thinking when income tax comes back I can cease using excel and get super serious about Co2.

Let me know, thoughts and opinions, and I'd up the tank size to 10 lb since it's a larger tank that's going to be having some heavy growth.
