Thor84 created the topic: 60 Gallon Planted Tank. Questions.

So after seeing Ken's thread "90 gallon rescape", I knew what my next project would be. I rehomed the convict and midas from the sparse looking 60 tall in my kitchen, and started doing some research. I set it up the saturday before last.
I got a quote from Aquarium world in Houston for everything I would need for a successful planted 60 gallon. They must have remembered me from when I bought the 210, because the estimate was for nearly $600 and way over what I was willing to spend.
I ended up buying what I thought I could squeak by with for now, for much less.
I just want to share some pictures, and ask a few questions. I have never really had success with plants in the past, and I want to make it work this time.

--Lighting
I bought a dual T8 fixture from lowes (like one that would mount to the ceiling), removed the ballast, sockets and wiring, then stuffed it all into the housing for a single 48" flourescent. Bulbs are one GLO- Aqua Glo 40w, and one GLO Flora Glo 40w. They run on a timer from 2pm to 11pm.
From what I have read, recomendations are 3 watts per gallon. I can only run about 80 watts total in this fixture. And that leaves me short quite a bit. I need 180 watts, but I really do not see how I can fit that much power over this tank. It is 48" long, but only about 12" wide. 21" from light source to substrate. Do I really need that much lighting? If so, what is the most cost effective way of doing it?
--Subtrate
I bought 50lbs of small grained gravel, and mixed it with 12lbs of "Flora base" substrate. I have a 2.5" to 3" bed all the way across.
For supplements, I started using Aqueon Aqarium Plant Food as directed on the bottle.
Do I need more for fertilizer?
How about a change in subtrate?
--Plants
I would be lying if I said I rememberd all of their names. There are amazon swords, a madagascar lace, mondo grass and some other sort of grass. Some wysteria???? and 2 other types I bought because of the purple in them.
--Fish
I have about 30-50 gallons worth of misc. tetras, hatchet fish, two blue gourami, and two roseline shark. The gourami are leaving as soon as the tank is not under quarantine any more..... they have eaten two of the unnamed purple plants and are starting to nibble on other plants.
--CO2
None as of yet. Do I need some? and what kind of set up would you recomend?

Any recomendations for plants?? I would like to branch out some if I can keep these alive. Eventually I would like to plant the 120.

Try feeding them lettuce it might stop them a little.

Looks good, everything you got sounds good but your going to be limited by your lighting but there are a bunch of low light plants that will do well.

Forget about watts per gallon it works as well as the inch per gallon rule. This chart works much better

Also you need to shorten your photo period up to 6-7 hours, i only run my lights for 8, 9 hours with the low plant mass you have is going to cause algae. Your substrate its good and your stocking should provide enough "ferts" and co2 that you shouldn't need to supplement much of either. If you add more plants or once it grows in you might need to add some co2, Seachem excel is a great co2 alternative for low light tanks just be aware some plants don't like it and will melt especially vals

thanks guys. adjusted the timer this morning to come on at 4, and go off at 11pm.
do you think the "plant food" will hurt anything if I continue using it? Or should I stop using it all together?
The swords are definitely doing good, the one in the corner has a stalk coming up, with one leaf on it so far. And the surviving purple plants, nearest the petrified wood, have new growth in the center.
On the other hand, the lace and the taller grass both look like crap.

Thanks ed. In case anyone was wondering, the rock on top of the log isn't for looks. That piece of wood still wants to float a week and a half later. :pinch:
